5 Ways Kids Can Learn Outside of School

For school-aged children, most of the learning that takes place during the year occurs at school. However, it is important that learning does not end there, especially over weekends and holiday breaks. Fortunately, there are many useful ways to acquire knowledge about various subjects at home and out in public. Here are five ways for kids to learn outside of a traditional educational setting.

1. Visit a Zoo

Most large cities in the United States have a zoo that people can visit. Even some smaller cities might have a zoo or something similar, such as an animal sanctuary or petting zoo, so check your local listings to see. Zoos are good ways for kids to observe and learn about different animals, particularly ones that they may not be as familiar with and see on a daily basis. Walking around the zoo is also a fun way for the entire family to get some exercise. Encourage kids to take pictures and ask questions about the animals they see.

2. Do Some Genealogy Research

Genealogy, or the tracing of a family's lineage, can be an interesting activity to do with children. Genealogy can improve the child's knowledge of history, politics and science, as well as their research skills. Even finding out about mistakes that one's ancestors made in the past can be a good lesson on doing what is right versus doing what is wrong.

To get started with genealogy research, look into sources such as 1950 census records and see where that takes you. You can also take this opportunity to talk about how times have changed, including ways that life has improved throughout the years as well as how some things have gotten worse through the decades. If your kids are adopted or if you otherwise are unable to find much on your lineage, pick a famous person such as an actor or politician and research their family.

3. Read

Reading is one of the easiest and most accessible ways for children to learn outside of the classroom. From a young age, encourage kids to read a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction books as age appropriate. If your child is at a very advanced reading level, it can be challenging to find books that are challenging yet without overly adult themes for their age, so ask their teachers and your local librarians for help with making a selection.

4. Create Things Together

It is useful to create objects in order to learn in addition to consuming materials such as books and educational television shows. Some ideas for creating include:

  • Drawing or painting a landscape scene of the child's favorite vacation spot

  • Building something that has a practical use

  • Developing some software code that can be used to play a simple online game

  • Writing a story

  • Planting and tending to a fruit, vegetable or flower garden

In addition to being a great learning opportunity, creating things helps children to build their self-esteem because they are able to see the results of their effort and hard work. Self-esteem is important when it comes to building meaningful relationships and continuing to learn new things.

5. Allow Kids To Help in the Kitchen

Allowing kids to help cook a meal by assigning tasks that they can safely handle is an excellent way to build science and math skills by measuring and combining ingredients. Cooking is an essential life skill, and doing this activity together teaches teamwork as well as the ability to be safe around sharp utensils and hot cookware.

Try one or more of these things to help your kids learn beyond the traditional classroom.
