Veterans are a highly skilled segment of the population. Service members of the armed forces go through intense training in the field, at sea, and in the sky. Their experiences may seem specialized for military scenarios but their wealth of knowledge can be applied to many professional arenas. Management jobs require a fully stocked toolbox of professional abilities and communication skills. Veterans have an arsenal of skills that translate to performing well in management positions.

1. Leadership

Military service fosters leadership abilities. Promotions and performance ratings push exceptional leaders to rise to the top. They must maintain the respect of their unit and inspire confidence. Managers put these skills toward completing projects, encouraging actionable ideas, and making difficult decisions that benefit an organization. Leaders can juggle the needs of people with the priorities of a business and veterans come in with applicable experience in this area.

2. Problem Solving

Creativity and optimizing efficiency are everyday parts of serving in military leadership roles. Veterans encountered many challenges during their time on active duty that sharpened their problem-solving skills. Their creativity can be directed towards making smart changes in the execution of certificate management and eliminating costly redundancies. Veterans often have experience that makes them more aware of security and safety on the job.

3. Discipline

Hard times roll through for many organizations and having a veteran in leadership can help everyone stay on track through the storm. Veterans are motivated to succeed and persevere during times of trouble. Their training sets them up to be strong and steady in the most trying moments. Managers need to be helpful models and great captains. Placing a veteran in a managerial role can improve the work ethic and climate of your organization.

4. Teamwork

Generations of veterans know that no person is an island. Collaboration and teamwork bring more success in working toward goals than any individual could achieve on their own. Soldiers and sailors must listen to each other and pay attention to the group’s well-being. Veterans make great managers because they are aware that functioning as a healthy team is essential for organizational growth and progress.

5. Quick Learning

New technology and fresh orders are just part of the regular adaptations that veterans expect to encounter. They must be able to learn, synthesize, and apply information on a quick turnaround. Managers have to be cognizant of multiple spinning plates and stay current in their professional field. The demands of military experience help veterans to be quick learners in the civilian workplace.

6. Coordination

Managing all those spinning plates without letting anything drop requires managers to be highly organized. Veterans can be experts at coordinating resources, people, and projects due to their experience with uncompromising military standards. Communicating effectively with people above and below them in a chain of command shows that veterans can recruit members of professional teams to fulfill important goals.

7. Stress Management

Military service members cannot shy away from facing the source of immediate or prolonged stress. They must use strategies to build resilience in the field and at home. Veterans’ stress management experience can shape them into valuable figures within civilian organizations. Their skills benefit team members both directly and indirectly as they may teach others to approach difficult projects in sustainably productive manners.

8. Diverse Experience

People in the military enter their years of service from diverse backgrounds and then they are exposed to a wide variety of experiences. Veterans may have spent time building skills in areas from horse training to force management. The same people who jump out of planes during one chapter of their military career may later work to direct resources around the world from the Pentagon. This level of valuable experience is largely unheard of in the civilian world and can create effective managers.

Consider hiring veterans to be amazing managers for your organization. Veterans can be assets to your business and inspire teams to perform at their best.
