Depending on who you talk to, you’ll get differing opinions on what you should eat, what you shouldn’t eat and the importance of exercise. Following the tips below will lead to good nutritional habits.
Avoid Empty Carbs
Steer clear of sugary calories and refined carbs. Processed carbs are processed to remove the nutrients and are low in fiber. They have no real health benefits. Especially when it comes to sugary drinks, the brain doesn’t measure liquid calories the same way it measures calories from food, so you end up consuming more calories overall. Try an alternative like carbonated and flavored water or even diet soda if you absolutely need a fix.
Eat Whole Foods
Eating real food goes hand-in-hand with avoiding processed foods. The more whole, one-ingredient foods you intake, the better balance of fiber and micronutrients you’ll get. The vitamins and minerals you intake from your food are important to body function and gut health, so it’s important to prioritize their intake.
Eat Quality Protein
As you adjust the foods you intake regularly, consider the proteins that are staples in your diet as well. Look for high quality protein sources that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Also incorporate eggs into your diet, even the yolks. Eggs and fish are rich in vitamins and nutrients that do your body good.
Incorporate Fruits and Veggies
If you’re suffering from health problems and wondering how to stop heartburn, IBS or other digestive issues, avoiding processed foods and switching to a healthier diet can help. Avoiding spicy foods and regularly exercising can help as well. Supplementing your diet with a lot of fruits and veggies will help regulate your body and put you at a lower risk of heart disease.
Cook and Eat Your Own Meals
Focusing on healthy, whole foods will help you lose weight and become healthier overall. This may mean making some changes in your life, like more frequent visits to the grocery store instead of stopping for fast food. Individuals who regularly cook and eat their own meals tend to be healthier overall. When you shop for ingredients, stick to the perimeters of the grocery store. Processed foods tend to be located in the center aisles.
Add Supplements and Probiotics
For good nutrition, consider taking probiotics and multivitamins to help round out your body’s needs. If you don’t want to take supplements, try incorporating foods rich in probiotics into your diet, like yogurt and sauerkraut. It’s also important to take in plenty of fiber for gut health.
Drink Water
Better nutritional practices go deeper than food though. Also consider your water intake. Hydration is key for body health and function. Drinking a lot of water can even support higher caloric burn. Water has so many benefits to your body as well. It protects your spinal cord and joints, it’s good for gut health and it helps regulate your body temperature. Adults should drink .75-1 gallons of water a day for optimal health.
Exercise Regularly
Exercise has its place when talking about nutrition as well. Cardio is one of the best things you can do for your health, both mental and physical. It’s beneficial in reducing fat. Likewise, lifting weights also has benefits to metabolic health. It strengthens muscles and actually increases your body’s rate of caloric burn. Both cardio and weightlifting together will lead to better body composition and lower risk of heart disease, diabetes and other diseases.
Sleep Well
Just like exercise, sleep is also important to good nutritional health. Poor sleep can reduce your physical and mental performance. In fact, it has huge impacts on health all around. During deep sleep phases, your body repairs itself and gets ready to take on another day. Not giving your body the time it needs to rest and recover and activities like looking at blue light before bed can both negatively impact your sleep performance and lead to weight gain, increased stress levels and poor digestion. Invest in a sleep tracker to better see how sleep is affecting your hours spent awake.
When thinking about nutrition eating habits are key, but nutrition is a whole-body experience. Developing good habits takes changes to foods, exercise routines and sleep routines.
