Leading a healthier life is something you have wanted to do for years. This year, you set the goal to finally get on the right path. Perhaps you had a health scare or are just tired of being so exhausted all the time. Whatever your motives, when you formulated your plan to get on the healthier path, you looked first at refining your diet. Now perhaps you've got a handle on that aspect you want to concentrate on exercises to help you become stronger and lose excess belly fat. Working out is so much more than just throwing on a pair of running shoes or grabbing a dumbbell. There are things you should do before you ever start that will help you succeed in the short and long runs. Take a closer look at four things you should start doing before you hit the gym to set yourself up for success the rest of the year.

1. Plan Your Workout Ahead of Time

One way newbies to fitness fail is by not planning their workouts in advance. Only you know what you have on your plate from day to day. With the high demands of work and family, you may have limited time to work out some days. Thus, it becomes imperative that you plan the kind of exercise before lacing up. A failure to plan means you may waste time at the gym or on the road trying to muddle your way through. This won't benefit your body or your health at all, and in fact, may lead to injuries or apathy. Planning ahead, even daily, can increase your results tremendously.

2. Give Your Body Fuel

Your body needs the proper fuel to burn while you workout. Starving yourself or failing to provide essential vitamins may result in a general weakness during and after you exercise. Your blood sugar may drop in the most dangerous situations, causing blood pressure to follow the same path. You may feel faint or actually pass out. Protein powder is a great source of fuel for your muscles before and after a workout. Vegetables, whole grains and carbohydrates in moderation will ensure your body functions as it should during the activity.

3. Spend Time Stretching

Giving your muscles a good stretch before and after working out may reduce strain and injury. Muscle pulls and strains can sideline your exercise schedule for a few weeks, causing you to lose momentum and muscle gained. You want to spend at least 15 minutes warming up before starting any kind of exercise. The exercises should be dynamic and diverse to give your muscles plenty of time to warm up without getting too spent.

4. Get a Good Night's Sleep

Even when exercising later in the day, sleep is critical. Without the proper rest, the body will start to lag and not produce the results you want. Exercise takes a lot out of you, and when you are already exhausted, the body will not respond well. Your fitness results may flounder or stall completely. Your brain will not be able to focus if it is not fully rested. Sleep is something that everyone benefits from getting more of. Your workout will not be the only area of your day that will improve with more sleep. You will be more productive at work, more patient at home and experience less stress when getting at least seven hours of sleep a night.

A healthier lifestyle takes time to develop and adjust to. However, with some advance planning, perseverance and sleep, you should start feeling and seeing the results of your hard work sooner.
