She wondered if a call to the head office could cost him his job. She knew that she was letting shame hold her back, but she couldn’t get a thick enough skin to let the scandal ring. She could lie, of course—just deny all of it and see how far that got her. That’s what a real bitch would do! But she didn’t know how much the management knew, or how they knew it.
Alana shoveled her belongings back into the rucksack. Damn it! Just as she hoped to relax and get her bearings. And was all that shaming bullshit necessary? Really!
Stuart was out on the porch. She blew past him, bags in hand. He matched her brisk step along the sidewalk and asked her what was the problem.
Then he saw the angry tears in her eyes. Sheepishly, he admitted that he had bragged to the other guys in the dorm about their encounter.
“Well, good job, there,” she spat at him. “You got me kicked out!” His mouth fell open. Apparently, he was allowed to stay.
“Let me help you,” he held out his hand to carry a bag.
“I think you’ve done enough already.”
She kept moving.
