I see them being leaders for GMO Labeling Education.

Hillcrest Whole Foods Market is on the Cutting Edge
One of my first stops back in San Diego after the Natural Product Expo West was the Whole Foods Market Hillcrest, located at 711 University Ave

My personal History with this store goes back to at least 2005, when following the Earth Fair, one of the world's largest Earth Day Events, I went into the produce section with a basket of Organic's locally grown strawberries.
Joe Rodriguez, Jr., a member of the fifth or sixth generation San Diego Farming family, is a master at growing these delightful berries without pesticides. The visit sparked a six week campaign that was basically co-sponsored by my friend Anthony Zolezzi, one of the world's greatest organic and green entrepreneurs, and author of a number of books including "Chemical Free Kids."
Anthony's own personal life had been transformed when he ate an organic strawberry and saw the difference between these and those of lesser quality.
Every Sunday, I would pick up cases of JR Strawberries at from the Local Hillcrest Farmers' Market and bring them into the store. I had a demo stand. The customers had never experienced such fresh farm ripe delicacies.
At that time, Local as a trend was just coming in, and I know I was setting a tone for what was to follow. Within six months of that experience, Whole Foods began its major push for local.
Curiously, one day, I was shopping up at the Seal Beach Wild Oat store and saw big banners for locally grown outfront. I went in to congratulate the produce manager. He pulled me aside. He wanted me to explain what Local meant. Obviously, the corporate publicity heads, started to promote local, following the WFM lead, before the staff had a chance to understand the concept.
FAST FORWARD TO 2013--WHOLE FOODS MARKET
Fast forward to March 9, 2013. On that day, I was with Walt Robb, Co-Ceo of WMF up at the Organic Center VIP Dinner at the Natural Product Expo West. On that same day, WFM announced that they were asking all their retailers to Label GMO's within five years.

WHAT PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW IS THAT EACH WHOLE FOOD MARKET HAS SOME LOCAL AUTONOMY
What people need to know is that each WFM has local autonomy. I consider the Hillcrest WFM, the own where I shop, a national trend setter.
The store has undergone a tremendous redesign in the last months. This was my first view!
I am very impressed! There are large banners in support of local. There are pictures of the local farmers who they stock. There was a beautiful display in the Parking Lot from Suzie's Farm, one of my favorite farmers.
GMO EDUCATION AT THE HILLCREST WFM STORE
I talked to Sal, one of my favorite store managers--Team Leaders. I complemented him on the new store appearance. We also talked about the new WFM Labeling initiative.
I want to create some events here at my Hillcrest WFM that features some of great new films that are out and soon to be out.
I want to see "Jeffrey M Smith's "Genetic Roulette" shown here at the store, and also Jeremy Siefert's "GMO-OMG"--soon to be released.
Sal was open to my ideas.
The key to the Right to Know about GMO's is a consumer rights issues. I can tell you now, the Hillcrest WFM will likely lead the nation in giving their staff and customers, the Right to Choose, and know their options.
