Relatively speaking, the bill
slid through. It was a no brainer
for them who voted for it,
an easy sell to the American eaters
of Junk Food. All the right things were said,
but the day after the nature is being flooded

REP FRANK LUCAS
In His Own Words
"The problem with a lame duck session is that it occurs after many members of Congress have been voted out of office or have retired. They are no longer held accountable for their actions by their constituents and can choose to enact legislation that they usually may not support. Top items in the lame duck session could be the controversial cap-and-tax plan, radical overhaul of our immigration laws, and massive new spending bills aimed at funding their liberal agenda.
Simply put, this is not the way to govern. Lame duck sessions should only be used to wrap up necessary business Congress was unable to complete – not to pass divisive and unpopular legislation that would dramatically alter the way our country operates."

THE NEWS OF THE DAY
DECEMBER 21, 2010
A major food safety bill that had almost been given up for dead was suddenly revived in the Senate late on Sunday evening, and may be ready for House approval as early as Tuesday.
In a parliamentary move laid out on the Senate floor by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid just after 7pm, the Senate took the food safety language that was passed as part of a stop-gap budget plan by the House, attached it to another House-passed bill and approved that by unanimous consent.

IN THE NEWS
It was a last-minute change for the legislation,
which seemed all but dead Sunday afternoon.
"This reaffirmed my faith in democracy," said Jean Halloran,
director of food policy initiatives at Consumers Union. "We were getting ready for a last-ditch effort . . . and they just went ahead an passed it, like they should have. . . . There's some hope now that the government will do a better job of protecting people" from tainted food.
The legislation would affect all whole and processed foods except meat, poultry and some egg products, which are regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), a main sponsor of the bill, called Sunday's vote a "critical victory" that would "give Americans one of the best holiday gifts they can receive this year - the assurance the foods they are eating are safer."
The measure had support from an eclectic array of groups across the political spectrum from the Chamber of Commerce to U.S. PIRG and was pushed by a coalition of food-safety groups that lobbied for two years. It passed the House more than year ago with strong bipartisan support. It cleared the Senate three weeks ago by a vote of 73 to 25, overcoming a filibuster threat from Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.).

The food safety bill--S. 510, the Food Safety Modernization Act--which some had given up for dead, was revived late Sunday attached to a shell bill and passed unanimously just before the Senate adjourned for the day.
ht
To get the food safety bill back to the House without the constitutional snag, the Senate used H.R. 2475 as a vehicle, amending it with the language of S. 510. Ironically, H.R. 2475 was originally a House version of the "cash for clunkers" bill, a shell with just enough life in it for the Senate's purpose.
The bill's goal is to increase the Food and Drug Administration's powers to keep food safe by increasing inspections of food facilities, placing stricter standards on imported foods and giving the agency broader authority to order a recall.
As word of the bill's new life got out, advocates expressed their relief. Many were part of a coalition that had sent a letter Sunday to Reid and Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, asking them to act quickly to save the bill before the end of the session.
Caroline Smith DeWaal, food safety director for the Center for Science in the Public Interest, said. "The Senate made good on its promise to pass food safety legislation tonight when it passed a corrected version of the FDA Food SafetyModernization Act. It is a huge victory for consumers following a weekend cliffhanger as both consumer and industry supporters prepared for bad news. Senator Harkin, Senator Reid, and Senator McConnell are to be congratulated on their skill in making sure American families will enjoy greater protection and safer food in 2011 and beyond."
Jean Halloran, director of Food Policy Initiatives at Consumers Union, said, "This is a wonderful day for consumers. This day will be especially important to families whose children have suffered lasting damage to their health, and families who have even lost a child, because of contaminated food. Many of them have worked hard for this bill to prevent others from having to go through a similar ordeal. This bill gives FDA essential tools like mandatory recall authority to insure that the food we eat is safe."

Sir Richard Branson Helps Celebrate
The Farm at Natirar, in a collaborative effort with Sterling College
and Rutgers University, aims for agricultural authenticity as it develops
a “Table at the Farm” dining model. Sir Richard Branson arrives
at Natirar’s Ninety Acres June 24th Preview Party with Founding Partner Bob WojtowiczPeapack-Gladstone, NJ --- With approximately two months until the opening of the restaurant, the farm at Natirar has come to life. The blossoming of the farm was commemorated with a kickoff
celebration held in the converted Carriage House, built in 1912, which will soon be transformed into the Ninety Acres Culinary Center. Sir Richard Branson appropriately arrived at the June 24th party driving
Natirar’s farm tractor after a brief tutorial of how to operate it from Natirar’s newest team member, resident farmer and recent graduate of Sterling College, Benjamin Mackie.
For reservations or more information, please call 908-901-9400
or visit the Natirar website at http://www.natirar.com.
ABOUT NATIRAR
In development by Robert Wojtowicz, Natirar is a much–anticipated luxury destination just an hour outside of Manhattan. Ninety Acres Culinary Center which consists of a restaurant, cooking school and farm will be Natirar’s first phase to open to the public. Future phases include a hotel, spa and fitnesscenter, function center, guest cottages, an outdoor swimming pool and cabanas, and a lawn sports pavilion that will facilitate numerous outdoor activities, including but not limited to tennis, croquet, flyfishing,
hiking, and biking. There is something for everyone at Natirar from the farm animals and verdant gardens, to beautiful vistas and rural history. The resort & spa offers private membership which allows year–round access to the resort’s amenities and activities. http://www.theclubatnatirar.com
ABOUT STERLING COLLEGE
Sterling has a student body of 100, a student to faculty ratio of 7:1, and an average class size of 10. As one of only seven “Work Colleges” in the nation, all of Sterling’s students work on campus and in the surrounding community for a portion of tuition cost. The main campus has 130 acres of woodlands, gardens, and pastures, with 300 acres of Boreal wetlands. Twenty-five percent of all food served in the
Sterling dining hall is grown or raised on Sterling’s organic farms In 2009, over 3,500 pounds of meat and over 8,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables were grown for the purpose of learning and to feed the Sterling College community. The Mission of Sterling’s Food Service is to manage the food system as an integral part of Sterling’s educational programs by demonstrating a living-what-we-teach philosophy. Aligning with this mission, Sterling strongly supports the partnerships between chefs and Vermont farmers. http://www.sterlingcollege.edu
THE CAMPAIGN TO EDUCATE WASHINGTON ON REAL FOOD SAFETY
These are our aims:
1-To support mobilization of one Farmers’ Market in our local area, the Hillcrest Farmers’ Market in San Diego. To continue to work with local organic farmers and help them sell more of their produce.
2-To continue to develop a 1/3 acre parcel of land near San Diego State College named the Enchanted Garden Intentional Community Growing Grounds where those who live here and who live around the world may study our process of learning how to keep the beat with nature through learning to live together cooperatively as a household that seeks to live in harmony with the earth. The motto of the house will be Keep The Beet. Through growing a simple beet in a pot, we can regain our beat with nature. Not all in the house garden. Some like to prepare food. Others help with other jobs, or rent. The land, as of January 2010 is being refinanced. A Trust to hold the land is being explored. The Seed Dream would be to leave a museum and park for future generations to learn from this experiment in cooperative living that has been going on since the early 1970′s. The intent is that what we learn here can help others, and Washington, understand and adapt to some of the shifts being asked of all of us now.
3- To develop relationships with those who influence Washington and government. A vast coalition across all political, religious, and philosophical lines has now formed. Mainstream media needs to be reached through bloggers filling the gap where journalism once told all points of view. Elected leaders need to be encouraged to follow the principles expressed in the song “America The Beautiful.”
4- We see the world as we know it now coming to an end. A Shift has already happened. It is for each of us to adapt to the earth and relearn the laws of nature, rather than attempt to further adapt nature to our ways. The source of our economic and health crisis is that we have lost our beat with nature. We can regain the beet through becoming once again a nation of gardeners who live in a world of gardeners. One Pot+One person=You are a Gardener. Start to grow your own food now.
