The line: "Happiness runs in a circular motion" came to me this past day as I was thinking about the circle of life that I have been appreciating recently in my compost management. All the hours of labor over the course of many months becomes truly worth it when the compost is finally ready and I can screen it for use in the garden! My happiness expands when I fill a bin of the "black gold" and transfer two buckets-full at a time to one of the fruit trees where I then spread that finished and screened compost around the base of where the tree being lives. Most recently I awakened to a pomegranate tree that had been virtually invisible to me over the previous two years! I made it a priority to feed it some compost and that required clearing a jungle of ferns that had taken over the whole ground around it. That took several days working around sunset each day. Finally the ground was clear and I spread the fist four bucket loads of the compost. The new soil looks so beautiful! I water the soil after each of several applications. The site is transformed! I thought I may put a new bench there and turn it into a little sitting area.
My composting has come a long way! Growing up as a city boy I never knew about the importance of healthy soil. I did not know about composting until I decided to live on an organic farm in the late 70's after I had discovered organic foods. For the last couple years I have been managing all the compost for a household of about nine. I treat every part of it with the best respect! As a result I have no problems with insects, critters, foul odors or any other problems that sometimes can appear with compost that is not managed properly. I'm proud of my "dirt" (almost never call it that!!)!!! The way I relate to food scraps now is in great contrast to the time that I went to Summer Camp where I got to ride on the back of a Ford pickup with the day's load of slop buckets to fed the pigs at the neighboring farm! There was a circle of life there but it was not completely appreciated by me. I am connecting with more of the circle now and that has taken on a sacred meaning that I never imagined existed before! Makes me wish I had a lot more compost to manage! Compost makes my heart sing! That's why "Happiness runs in a circular motion" came to me this past day!
