Greetings!
Is all the GMO sugar coming from sugar beets? If it also includes sugar
cane then do we need to ask every company that's distributing organic cane
grown sugar whether their sugar comes from non-GMO sources?
Thank You!
Hi there.
Yes, all the GMO sugar in the US is coming from sugar beets. There are field
trials of genetically modified sugar cane in Brazil and Australia, but so
far it is not available commercially and not in the US.
Your second question is harder to answer. If your organically grown cane
sugar is coming from outside of the US it wouldn't hurt to ask the company
if they are located near any of the field trial areas, since that
potentially could cause genetic contamination if the field trials aren't
contained properly (which they rarely are). For right now the answer seems
to be to purchase organic cane sugar grown in the United States.
