30 Day Juice Fast Journey -- Day Two

I woke up this morning bloody starving! But, all in all, I survived.

I woke up this morning bloody starving.  Absolutely famished!  I could have eaten my feather pillow and I tried.  But it was too tough.  Hisssssss...

And my tongue was coated in a white film.  Something I am going to see every morning until my body is cleaned out.  A coated tongue is a sure sign of a toxin filled body and everyone's tongue is coated in the mornings because their bodies detox during their sleep.

So, already the toxins are leaving my body.  After I brushed my teeth, mouth and scraped my tongue (which should be done every morning! Scrape or brush that tongue!), I fixed a cup of hot lemon tea, semi-sweetened with honey (I want it tart) with a generous amount of cayenne pepper.  I've been drinking this hot lemon-pepper tea for a very long time and can handle large amounts of pepper heat.  Besides I need something to knock me on me arse, because I'm not having my usual freshly ground, bold cup of Jamaican Blue Mountain (or Kona, Kenyan AA, or Sumatra for the next 30 plus days), sweetened and creamed with love (and sugar), while I puff on my first cigarette of the day...  So, I need something bold enough to quiet the gnawing need...

In the meantime, I was frothing-at-the-mouth-famished!  Even my cat looked tasty and I hate Chinese food!  But I took my cup of lemon-pepper tea out on my lanai to watch the morning unfold and try to get a grip on the rest of the day.  I knew this day was going to be rough.  Probably one of the roughest days of the fast.  Tomorrow, Day 3, in the beginning I'm gonna think, "This is absolute bullcaca... I can't do this. It hurts too much.  I'm too bloody hungry."  And it's going to be a major effort not to break down and binge.  Day 3 puts me too close to the edge of 'making it' to Day 4 when, for the most part, my digestive system shuts down and the hunger pangs begin to fade away.

But I am getting ahead of myself, today is Day 2 and I am very hungry.  But I made plans for that and picked up a load of magazine and a couple new books to occupy my mind and belly.  I also plan to upload more files to the Yahoo Groups site for the girls.  Remember I want them to fly.  I have a few writing project I'm dabbling with and I also made that pot of veggie broth yesterday so I can heat it up and try and trick my famished belly into believing it just consumed a three course meal, main course broiled salmon.  Okay, okay enough of that.

So.

No cigarettes.  No food.  No coffee.  No cigarettes.  No food.  No coffee.  No cigarettes.  No food.  No coffee.  No...

Funny half way through the morning, I was wanting a glass of wine.  I like wine now and then, but don't ever drink during the morning or the day.  But, like with coffee, I usually have a cup when I wake up and maybe one more around 3 or 4 in the afternoon and won't even finish all of it.  I don't drink that much coffee, even so, when I am not allowed to have it anymore, my desire for it is more pronounced.  That's how I felt about having a glass of wine.  I can't have it for the next 30 plus days, so of course, I want some at 10:00 am.  Geez... strange cravings.

Today I did much better on the smoking... muuuuuuuch better than yesterday.  But I was so hungry all day that it almost didn't matter that I didn't smoke anything.  I felt like shit anyway.  I had one of those quiet, lingering, stubborn headaches all day and felt slow and weakened.  I'm hoping by tomorrow afternoon the raw, cutting, hunger pangs making complicated knots with my guts subside enough that I can relax alittle.  Just a little, that's all I'm asking.

Again, I drank my various herbal teas, waters and veggie broth interspersed throughout the morning, day and evening.  The thing about juice fasting, for me, is I need to keep the variety interesting.  I can't chew, I can't consume the beverages I consume ordinarily.  I am limited, so I must provide some diversity in taste, texture and appeal.

Three sixteen ounce juices undiluted:

Morning:
apples
watermelon
grapes
quarter inch ginger

Lunch:
carrots
apples
celery
quarter beet
spinach
cukes
tomatoes
dash hotsauce

Dinner:
carrots
apples
celery
parsley
spinach
brocolli
green bell pepper

I am not going to weigh myself until the end of the first week.  On every juice fast I have done, by the end of the first week, I will have shed about 6 pounds, give or take, of unwanted fats and toxins.

I have never regained the entire first 30 pound loss. I am not a snacker or a binger or a junk/fast food freak either.  My body does not enjoy calisthinetics the way my brain does.

I think because my body was being fed hugely powerful, highly concentrated nutrients, my skin just slurped it all up.  Still.  My first 30 day fast I was in my mid-thirties.  And I wasn't too worried at that time about wrinkles as much as I was concerned with acute bronchitis and an infected sabaceous cyst on my FACE, for goshsakes, that resembled a perky breast in profile.  The last 30 day fast I did I was standing on the threshold of my 40s and, of course, wrinkles became more of a concern that time around.  But at the end of the fast, I looked so good my mirrors wanted to kiss me everytime I passed one.  So my concerns, at that time, were for naught.

Now I am a very early 40-something goddess and while I am not all that much overweight and I still have no  wrinkles (knock on wood), they are much more of a concern to me now.  One thing that I believe has helped to keep those wrinkles at bay on my face, considering I live in southwest Florida, the land of the Beach Bunny, is the fact that besides the veggies and fruits I eat all the time even when not fasting, I do use alot of food on my face.

I keep fancy plastic jars of honey, dry milk, sea salt, sugar, extra virgin olive oil and oats in my bathroom to use in my baths, to make body scrubs and facial/hair masks.  In the kitchen, when I am cooking meals, I rub a slice or two of whatever fruit/veggie I am chopping up, on my face.  Usually this is an apple or a  tomato (excellent to dry up those nasty blackheads) or a cucumber (loaded with silica which is ambrosia for the skin and hair) when I make the salads... Or I swipe my finger in the glass that was full of the juice I just consumed and wipe it all over my face. Or I rub a lemon slice on my face, (great for acne and lightens any spots), or run a strawberry slice over my face, or a pineapple slice... the acids in the fruits dissolve the cement that holds on to the dry, dead skin cells that make the skin appear drab.   My husband laughs at me sometimes because I forget to rinse my face (I'm cooking usually when I do this) and I have been known to answer the door with tomato seeds stuck to my nose, or lemon pulp smeared across my cheek... picture it.  It's funny the expressions I receive.

       For Your Information:
  • Salicylic acid from aspirins, or willow bark
  • Lactic acid from (sour) milk  (Cleopatra's favorite)
  • Malic acid from apples, cherries, tomatoes and other fruits
  • Citric acid from citrus fruits such as lemons and oranges
  • Glycolic acid from sugar cane
  • Tartaric acid from grapes (wine?)
  • Mandelic acid from bitter almonds
Just remember to rinse your face about 15 minutes or so after you've smeared a tomato or a lemon slice all over it.  It can lead to amusing embarassment.

Here's a little recipe for bath bombs.  On juice fasts, I don't add coloring because I don't want my body to absorb anything chemical or synthetic because my liver will just have to filter it as a toxin.  I use genuine essential oils not synthetic fragrance oils, though I half my usual amounts because everything is magnified in a purified body. And I usually stick to the simple tried and trues such as chamomile essential oil or lavender. The essential oils work magic on my moods, mind, spirit.  Magic can come in handy during juice fasts.

BATH BOMBS
Ingredients:

2 parts baking soda
2 part sea salt
1 part citric acid
1 part cornstarch or arrowroot powder
Scent  (Essential oils are better than synthetic oils)  (5 to 15 drops, depending on amounts of dry parts)
Color  (definitely optional if you don't want synthetics in your bomb)

Instructions:

Color and scent the 2 parts salt.  Mix the EOs well into the salts.  Then mix the dry powders with the scented salts.  Mix well.

Melt a small amount of virgin coconut oil, shea, cocoa or mango butter and use it to bind the dry ingredients together without making them too wet.  Form into balls or pack into molds.  Let dry and package in plastic bags or jars.

Throw one or two in your next bath, light the candles, crank the tunes and relax.

Well, I am at the end of the day and looking back I can say it wasn't as bad as it seemed while it was happening.  I was extremely hungry all day long.  I still am and I still have a headache.  Hot broth appeased me as I was drinking it, but my belly started hollaring not long after my cup was emptied.  And I was using a soup cup, not a coffee cup.  But all in all, I survived and as old Scarlett said, "Tomorrow is another day."

    Until then, sweet dreams...
