Sex Addiction - Myth or Reality?

In recent years, concerns about an emotional condition that seems to place greater emphasis on having sex and less on balancing sexual activity with other aspects of life has become more common.

Most people would agree that sexual activity is healthy, especially when both partners act responsibly. In recent years, concerns about an emotional condition that seems to place greater emphasis on having sex and less on balancing sexual activity with other aspects of life has become more common. The most popular term for this condition is known as sex addiction. Is it an actual addiction or simply a behavior? Should there be some sort of recognized treatment for sex addiction in Toronto? Here are some things you should know about the current line of thinking.

A Growing Number of Professional Counsellors Take Sex Addiction Seriously

Known by many names such as hypersexuality, Don Juanism, nymphomania, or excessive sexual drive (ESD), there are those who believe claiming the condition is actually an addiction is nothing more than an excuse for a lack of self-restraint. Others are not so sure. That includes professional counsellors, such as Betzalel Wolff Toronto sex addiction counsellor, who have experience in treating patients who suffer with conditions that are readily recognized as addictions.

The scope of the debate can be exemplified by considering the effort that goes into a publication known as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The most recent edition is known as the DSM-5 and does not list hypersexuality as an addiction. At the same time, the previous edition did include a section known as “Sexual Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified.” Many counsellors saw that section as providing a basis for supporting their conviction that sex addiction in Toronto and other places is a bona fide addiction and should be treated as such.

Even without an official designation in the DSM-5, a number of professional counsellors do recognize that patients need help for sex addiction and choose to include that help in their practices. The number of counsellors who do so are expected to increase as the years pass.

What About Statistics?

Statistics about the condition are hard to find. This may be partly due to the fact that people living with this condition are not always willing to admit there is a problem. Others may believe that what they think of as being “oversexed” or “enjoying sex to the max” is not anything to be concerned about.

Even so, there are a few statistics that can help illustrate the presence of sex addiction by numbers to some extent. For example, there are studies indicating that somewhere between 24 million and 30 million people in the United States live with this condition. That’s based on a combination of statistics and anecdotal information shared online as well as samplings of information shared by professional counsellors.

How About Treatment?

There are treatments for sex addiction in Toronto that are appropriate for people of any gender or orientation. A proper approach to Toronto sex addiction treatment can be Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and other forms of talk therapy. Medications known to improve emotional balance while also dampening libido are also possibilities. Since there are medications that may increase the desire for excessive sexual activity as a side effect, adjusting the dosage or placing the patient on a different medication may also be part of the treatment process.

There is help for sex addition when a patient admits there is a problem. The right sex addiction counsellor can help the patient identify the origins for the issue and structure a course of treatment that will help. While it will take time, it is possible to regain a sense of balance and enjoy sex without the activity overwhelming the rest of the patient’s life.
