Peace-Pax-Shalom 2 by mayah(c)2017
Mixed Media collage on canvas board, 10" x 8" Words: "I don't know why we have to resort to violence when we disagree--it hurts my heart and it bleeds--Love and Light to the injured, the dead, and those left behind to grieve"
The second class focused on making collage faces on canvas. The first art piece, "Peace-Pax-Shalom 1", utilizes torn-up magazine photos, tissue paper, and acrylic paint applied over a stencil. A piece of white tissue paper was covered with hand-written words "shalom, peace, pax" with copper colored ink pen. When the tissue paper is applied with glue or gel medium, the white tissue paper becomes translucent, leaving the words visible to be seen. The finished art is coated with acrylic glaze as a protective layer.
Peace-Pax-Shalom 2 was made while the first piece was drying. A small roller with raised dots on it was run over the red acrylic paint to create texture, and the words were scratched into the paint with a dried-up ink pen tip while the paint was still wet. When writing the words "peace/pax/shalom" on the tissue paper used for the first art piece , some of the ink bled through onto newsprint paper underneath. The words that formed on the newsprint were ripped up and put into the interior of the large heart. White paint dots on white tissue paper, ripped in half, form the two small hearts; lastly, pieces of ribbon were added to the heart.
I have been thinking a lot about the recent incidents of violence in the U.S. and around the world... despite my intention of sending the energies of love, light, and compassion out into the world, at times I feel heartbroken and doubtful that I am really contributing to peace on the planet. The two art pieces, both "self portraits" expressing my thoughts, emotions, and spirit, reflect two different aspects of myself: the first art piece emanates my hope and confidence in an evolving humanity and a peaceful planet to come and my positive contribution to such, while the second art piece reflects my despair following another incident of irrational human behavior.
