Good question. Giving excessive attention to them via worry and cleansing could very well be supporting them. They thrive and multiply more quickly in people who are fearful, anxious and angry. Worrying about them and plotting ways to eliminate them may, indeed, be perpetuating the problem. Especially in light of the fact that they are pleomorphic in nature. Catching them is irrelevant if the internal environment is producing them.
