I frequently advise not doing this. The ground electrode serves as a saftey zone for parasites. Therefore, not all are killed. Keep the ground electrode only in the hand and away from the rest of the body. You should note a difference.

I've seen statements such as this before, and they always set me to wondering...

Grand statement: All zappers are floating with respect to ground.

For the less tech, "ground" has a specific meaning in the world of electric and electronic circuits. It is the term used for the "reference potential" of the circuit. Since electrons must flow from somewhere to somewhere, measurements can make sense only if we all agree on where we are. Zappers produce "positive" pulses only because we agree on what "positive" and "negative" mean. Implied in the word "positive" is the phrase "positive with respect to the reference." We call the reference "ground" because the original electrical experiments were measured with respect to the ground - literally. This is why power engineers talk about "earth ground as something possibly different from just plain "ground". "Floating" means that no point in the circuit or device is specifically referenced to anything external. In the case of zappers, both the positive and ground terminals are floating above - as in "not in physical or electrical contact with" - the earth. So far, so good.

The problem with the Grand Statement:

Zappers are powered either by batteries or by AC adapters specifically designed to insulate their output from "ground". All electronic circuits have an implied ground, the reference point for understanding how the circuit works. But the reference isn't connected to anything absolute in the real world, so it really is an arbitrary label. A zapper circuit making 100% ***negative*** pulses would appear exactly the same to the biological systems within a body. In the same way "up" and "down" lose all meaning in the weightlessness of space, "ground" has no meaning when the system is not "grounded".

OK, so what?

Even if we substitute "the more negative potential" for the term "ground" (in which case, a negative-output zapper really would be equivalent), how do the parasites know?" What is so magical about the electron source (electrons flow from negative to positive) that it is a "safety zone" for the bad guys, but not the good guys? Does this mean that the positive terminal is a safety zone for the thousands of beneficial bacteria and other micro-organisms? Given how small are the differences between some of these good and bad critters, seems pretty convenient....
