Actually, a pap smear is not a true biopsy - yes they gather some skin cells but not enough to be called a biopsy. A true biopsy would be a colposcopy or cone biopsy (2 different procedures). I've had the pleasure (NOT!) of having both done. I don't believe that a pap smear by itself is harmful or dangerous - but I would draw the line at the colposcopy or cone biopsy.
