Sexual activity doesn't equal love, and I had to learn that, too. I was a young adult during the permissive 1970's when everyone was getting stoned and having sex with everyone else - LONG before the discovery of HIV/AIDS and other incurable, sexually transmitted diseases. I made my own share of stupid choices and, as you pointed out, they were disastrous.
When I asked (yes, I ASKED! LMAO!!!) my ex to marry me, I thought that he was a wonderful, handsome, charming person who had just experienced too many bumps in his Life's Road. I was very stupid, and very naive and I made a near-fatal error by choosing him. Once I got out and began my evolution from victim to Survivor, I realized that sex was something that I could live without, if need be.
You are young enough that your experiences with your former boyfiend will actually strengthen your self-assurance and self-worth. You will never allow (willingly, for sure) another human being to treat you in the same manner, again. There will be plenty of time for you to find a companion and partner. You'll know that it's a good situation when trust, honesty, compassion, encouragement, support, and partnership are prelude to a safe and fulfilling sexual relationship.
