The first thing you need to remember is that weight loss and fat loss are two different things. Rather than getting into the math, suffice it to say that a person who carrys around 35% bodyfat (which is normal for average out of shape North Americans), a loss of 50% fat and 50% muscle will result in a smaller fatter person. As muscle is roughly 1/2 to 1/3 the size of fat of the same weight, you will look better and yes.... sexier when most of the weight lost is fat. Secondly, muscle is metabolically active tissue. It burns fat while you sit in front of the computer.

The few calories you do eat have only served to slow down your metabolism. Your body has adapted and you will eventually start putting on fat weight at 1500 calories or less. Notice anorexic people. They weight very little. They carry very little muscle, yet carry more fat than a person would expect a person in that situation to carry and they are unhealthy. They eat next to nothing and yet I eat between 3000 and 5000 calories a day, if not more, and I carry much less fat (currently only 8% of me is fat). A person needs to eat to burn fat. Eating keeps the metabolism running high.

The first thing I would do at your age is to work out with weights. This will do two things. 1) Add metabolically active tissue to burn more fat and 2) improve hormonal health which will make you feel younger and burn more fat. Secondly work out first thing in the morning. Either on an empty stomach or with just a protein shake prior to your workout. This will enhance the hormonal effect from the weight training workout. If you need to do any cardio, do it following your weight program. Your workout should be only 45 to 60 minutes long. Any longer than that and cortisol is released by the adrenal glands. Cortisol is responsible for tissue breakdown. We want to get the body into an anaobolic (building up) state, not a catabolic (tearing down) state. At the age of 60 your catabolic processes have kicked in for 3-5 years already and will increase as you age, all while the anabolic processes slow down. The combination of these processes is what we call aging.

As far as diet is concerned the book I am working on discusses two approaches. A cyclical low carb diet and a low glycemic diet. Both are effective and both work, albeit the cyclical low carb diet is more effective, it like any low carb diet is a greuling diet but you do achieve your results quicker. In the case of the low glycemic diet, you would eat your last carbs at 3 PM so as not to affect insulin as much prior to sleep.

As I mentioned I am writing a book about this very topic. It will take a complete book to discuss this at enough detail to give anyone an idea of what to actually do. Remember that diet, e.g. what you feed yourself, is 80% of your success. The exercise is the final 20%, however without the weight bearing exercise the diet will not work. They are synergistic. Until my book is written I can point you to a number of books. The Metabolic Diet by Dr. Mauro Di Pasquale. The Ketogenic Diet by Lyle MacDonald. Natural Hormone Enhancement by Robert Fagin. Fat Wars by Brad King. Bio Age by Brad King. The Age Free Zone by Dr. Barry Sears. The Food Connection by Sam Graci.

As far as working out is concerned, a good personal trainer would be the best way to go. Once you know how to do the exercises you can do them on your own.

I can't think of any good book that discusses motivation, my book will cover a lot about motivation. This is the most important aspect. A good place to start would be with The Law of Attraction by Michael Losier. The message I can pass on here is that you must visualise that which you will become and not only visualise but actually feel it. Feel it for real as if it has already happened. Once you do, it is only a matter of time before you actually succeed. When I had my 44 inch waistline I felt that I have the body I do now and I felt the trophies I would ultimately win in my sport. People told me I was crazy for feeling and believing this. They still do tell me I'm crazy and yet I still bring home the trophies. There is much power in intent and in feeling. Emotion is one of the most powerful forces in the Universe.

I hope this helps.
