I posted this in the Acid/Alkaline forum first as a response to a question. Since this reflects on how I feel about the subject of Alkalizing, I thought it might be interesting to post it here and get some feedback.
I believe that alkalizing is only one piece of a very complex puzzle. Alkalizing, fasting and the various cleanses do not heal the body; rather they free the body so it can heal itself. We are so caught up the the allopathic/pharmaceutical mindset that even when practicing alternative methods we still think do this one thing or take this one supplement and we will be healed. We have to be able to free ourselves from that "take this pill and call me in the morning" mindset and see the overall picture when it comes to health and healing. What we need to be doing is making sure we allow are body to return to its ideal state of balance, homeostasis.
The various cleanses we do including fasting release a lot of toxins into the bloodstream. Many of the toxins are acidic in nature. The body is designed to handle this and the blood pH will not vary to the point its dangerous as long as all organs are functioning properly. The key is not to put too much stress on the body at one time and overwhelm it with toxic waste. That is why I always stress entering into a fasting program slowly and gradually. Both Ehert and Bragg wrote that the average modern man would die if they suddenly begin a long Water Fast without preparation. The reason of course is the release of too many toxins that come out faster than the body can handle them.
For the body to become self healing we must find and stick to the proper diet for our needs and for our body's condition. A sick toxic body could probably not tolerate being raw vegan or even vegan at first, however, once cleansed this might be possible. Eliminate the junk from the diet first, your emotional craving may be intense, but you know you are not harming your body. Next you can eliminate or reduce the foods you now eat, but wish to give up like meats and dairy. It might take months or years to find the proper diet to maintain health, heal and stay at the proper pH.
Cleanses will reduce the congestion that keeps the body from quickly and properly eliminating toxins and metabolic waste. Colon and Liver Cleanses are vital, you can do these, and either by diet, or supplements (including the alkalizing drink) try and keep your pH from going too low. Many people will also benefit from kidney and parasite cleanses. Dry skin brushing and gentle exercise like walking and rebounding will help cleanse the lymphatic system. This should become second nature to everyone.
While you are working at cleansing your body and trying to maintain a safe pH, you can try fasting one day a week or three days a month. This will accelerate your cleansing efforts, but will not overly stress a still toxic body. After your first round of addressing specific organs for cleansing you could probably juice fast or do a Master Cleanse type fast for seven to ten days. This will help cleanse the entire body and also address weight loss issues. Remember that human fat is a storehouse of toxins, and adipose tissue, when broken down for ketones during Water Fasts produces an acidic state. So even weight loss should be approached on a level that will not overtax the body with accumulated toxins and acids.
As your body cleanses, it will balance out to where the pH levels will be normal for each specific organ. The stomach needs to be acid. The large intestine supports acid loving bacteria as healthy flora that help control the bad bacteria and regulate other naturally occurring organisms like Candida and keep them from proliferating out of control. Likewise, the urinary system needs to be somewhat acidic to control bacterial growth. Even our skin has an acid mantle to prevent bacteria from entering and keep it moist and supple. That dry taut feeling you get from some soaps is the result of alkaline soaps removing the acid mantle.
Acid is not the enemy, it is simply a condition that should not get out of control. A healthy diet, my Naturopath recommends 80% vegetables and fruit, 10% animal products (if desired)and 10% grains as the best ratios for balance, is essential for proper pH. Proper elimination from all excretory organs, skin, lungs, colon and kidneys is absolutely necessary. Fresh air, deep breathing, safe exposure to the sun, proper amounts of sleep and regular gentle exercise will all bring the body into the balance it needs. Then, natural healing can occur and health will be restored.
