Hi there

I am hypothyroid (MD) and have been told I have Candida, leaky gut and phase 2 liver disfunction (naturopath). I believe that Candida and leaky gut cause all autoimmune diseases such as hypothyroidism. But once Candida has taken hold and has spread, your whole metabolism and immune system is impaired.

I was told to take synthetic hormones for the rest of my life. I really really didn't want to do that and realised that getting rid of Candida may allow my thyroid (which may not be damaged) to run at a normal rate. But if the thyroid is trying to battle Candida and usually other parasites that come with it, then it doesn't have a chance.

Also taking thyroid drugs doesn't get to the root cause- maybe candida. Armour thyroid drugs are better than the synthetic. But I dont take them because once your body gets used to receiving a large dose of T3 and T4 everyday it will produce less naturally in the long run and you have to stay on the drugs for the rest of your life. The thyroid controls your heart rate among hundreds of other bodily functions. I have a history of heart disease in my family and didn't want to jeapordise my heart. Is your heart rate low? If it is high I wouldn't be speeding it up.

Anyway once you have Candida (whether hypothyroid or not) you need to kill it. Taking armour to speed up your metabolism may speed up the process, but when you stop your metabolism may slow down even further until it gets a balance.

T4 and T3 are hormones secreted from the pitutary gland and don't come from the thyroid. They are messages from the brain telling the thyriod to speed up metabolism or not. In your case the brain didn't think it needed to speed up metabolism. The T4 and T3 numbers change everyday, especially related to the woman's cycle. Most doctors only think women are hypothyroid which is rubbish.

Hypothyroidism to me just means that the body it telling the thyroid to speed up. Therefore there are parasites and bacteria or toxins in your body that your liver maybe can't process. It could mean one, two or more of your organs are not functioning properly.

Have you recently given up smoking?

I was diagnosed hypothyroid about 2 weeks after I gave up smoking. I realised that 80 percent of people told they were hypothyroid had recently given up smoking. But of course the doctors didn't bother to ask and I didn't mention it at the time not thinking it was relevant. So I didn't take the drugs and got my T3/4 checked monthly. It came down dramatically from 5.8 to 3.1 in three months. Therefore I concluded the nicotine used to speed up my metabolism and my body was used to relying on that daily dose. When I stopped smoking my thyroid had to do the work and the brain was sending messages in elevated T4 hormones to the thryoid to get a move on.

If your thyroid is damaged has a goitre or lump, does not uptake Iodine etc then you have a different situation. But if you catch it now and get rid of candida no lasting damage may be done to the thyroid. The last thing you want is damage to any organ that is irreversable.

Hope that makes sense. It is just my opinion and personal experience.
