This is a problem within the U.S. health system. Other countries recognize and treat parasites yet it's some sort of voodoo topic here unless you have travelled to a foreign country.
For example there are over 1000 new cases of neurocysticercosis diagnosed in the U.S. each year, about 3 a day. And this is with a health system that rarely tests for the disease, so who knows how many people suffer with it. According to Merck you can get the disease without ever travelling outside the country. We do import food and are constantly in contact with people who immigrate and travel. And less than 50% of stool samples show evidence of it.
If you tell a doctor you have parasites, he probably thinks you're delusional. And he doesn't want his name attached to the referral.
I do think it's odd we deworm pets regularly, but we're supposedly immune to everything. People in foreign countries deworm on a regular basis.
