Thought I might share some of my recent research.
High fat diet increases translocation of LPS (endotoxaemia) and lowers bifidobacteria.

High fat diet increased intestinal permeability.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18305141
High fat diet decreased bifidobacteria and increased LPS shedding gram negative bacteria.

Very strong link between both translocation of LPS and intestinal permeability and major depression.

High fat diet directly linked to Depression in mice.

High fat diet caused changes in the brains of mice causing depressive symptoms

Corelation between high fat diet and depressed humans.

Translocation of LPS caused by high fat diet was reversed by FOS, possibly due to increase in bifidobacteria.

Hypothesis:
I think a high fat diet promotes 'bad' bacteria in the bowel and inhibits 'good' bacteria such as bifidobacteria. The bad bacteria cause 'leaky gut' and allow LPS to cross the bowel/blood barrier. This translocation of LPS provokes an immune response, triggering the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines which travel to the brain and cause brain fog and depression.
Consuming a bifidobacterial probiotic such as Align, and/or taking a pro-bifido prebiotic such as Bimuno may reduce bad bacteria, repair the leaky gut and inhibit the translocation of LPS, leading to a reduction in brain fog and depression. Of course reducing fat in the diet would also be a good idea.
