Low stomach acid is more commonly the cause of reflux than too much acid. There is one condition, very rare, that does cause too much acid. Normally as we age we produce less and less acid. A lot of different conditions can cause low stomach acid. I would never, never take a PPI!!
For my reflux, which was so bad I was sleeping in a recliner and hunting for a surgeon to do the operation, I started taking HCl with protein meals and adding one more each meal until I got to an amount that helped me. I also had to push my stomach down regularly until the valve got tight enough to hold it in place.
Research "hypo-chlorhydria" and "ascended stomach" or just 'low stomach acid'.
PPIs should be against the law! Anyway if you read the fine print they are not for long term use. You would starve your body of nutrients and the bacteria and parasites would be able to gain a foothold, because the acid levels would be so low!
Do not take HCl while you are taking NSAIDs or if you have an ulcer.
Many supplements can neutralize stomach acid. Anything that is very alkaline.
A very good book to read is "Why Stomach Acid is Good for You" by Jonathan Walsh.
