Lack of Iodine was probably the foundation to your thyroid issues. Our bodies are being assaulted to chemicals that our bodies "think" is Iodine -- fluoride and bromide and not being iodinated enough to push out those halides cause problems not only for our thyroids but everywhere else too. There is a very strong link to being Iodine deficient and bromide toxic and breast cancer.

Once the thyroid begins to falter and become sick, the poor adrenals try to compensate. After a while, they become burned out too.

Chronic stress is hard on the adrenals. Adrenal fatigue can be caused by extended illness like lyme or epstein bar (mono) or having to cope with the extended illness of a loved one. If you were subclinically hypothyroid before your grandfather got ill, your adrenals were probably already stressed before then too.

Toxic chemicals like mercury and perchlorate (rocket fuel) in water supply do damage too.

The good news is that supplementing with fairly high doses of iodine can chelate out heavy metals like mercury and arsenic as well as the perchlorate and halides. By fairly high doses, I mean 50-100 mgs which is huge compared to the RDA of 150mcg. Iodoral is a tablet form of iodine and potassium Iodide that is readily available online.

Of course, in addition to iodine, the thyroid needs l-tyrosine and selenium to convert the iodine to the thyroid hormone.

parasite cleansing would also probably help as well as liver supportive supplements like NAC (n-acetyl-cysteine) or milk thistle, as well as Bowel Cleanse and liver flush.

Most, doctors do not know how to diagnose thyroid issues even if you present with multiple symptoms of hypothyroidism, and the TSH range that most labs go by is too high and not the recommended range .3-3.0 that the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE). Lab corp for instance goes by .4-4.0 for normal TSH range. Doctor's also miss the fact that low ferritin values can cause fatigue and affect your thyroid function. The road to recovery involves supporting the adrenals and addressing your thyroid issues. Knowing whether you have high cortisol, low cortisol or combination of both low and high will enable you to treat your adrenal fatigue.
