I'm going to jump in here to put things into perspective.
There are innumerable factors which can lead to medically significant fungal infections or over-growth.
In rare cases, you can pick a nasty strain or species from the environment such as cryptococcus neoformans from bird poo--this is a yeast form.
When it comes to yeast|fungal infections, immunocompetence is the first thing that factors in.
What is not talked about often, is the fact that there are many reasons why a healthy immune system can be made vulnerable.
Things like HLA type [sort of like blood type, but for white blood cells] genetic defects, hormonal imbalances\troubles, chemical\toxin exposures, bacterial\viral infections and finally parasitic infections.

Parasitic infestation\infection is likely the starting point for many people here.
Problem is, too little is known about how these inhabitants interact with host immunity.
Because these things circumvent specific immune responses, the result often causes dysbiosis[anarobic over-growth] and biologically active metabolites from both parasites and host cells.
This means there are all sorts of chemicals in your system, which cause a wide array of physiological problems. The list is very long, and includes chronic allergic reactions. This causes a shift from a balanced Th1\Th2 to a Th2 dominant condition.
The extreme of this, is what is seen in HIV AIDS and other immunodeficiences.
So you see, this is the perfect groundwork for fungal over-growth.

I would also like to mention, there is increasing evidence that intracellular parasites\pathogens can cause specific Th1 immunity issues.
