they don't mention it because their approach is medical and they are interested in chemicals (drugs) that show dramatic clinical effect.

I think that's right, generally, but some of the articles have mentioned kelp and the diets of certain people in different geographical areas correlating Iodine consumption with pathologies.



generally, nothing in nature will do this but that doesn't mean it doesn't contain the required element or that it can't be just as effectively used to achieve the same benefit.


I'm not as agreeable on that one, since many things in nature do show dramatic clinical effect - bloodroot, strammonium leaves, digitalis, rauwolfia, coca, cannabis sativa, datura, saw palmetto, echinacea, nightshade, bilberry, etc.

But I do hear where you're coming from and don't disagree in toto.
