Hey - I wanted to throw this message out there. When I have more time, I'll post this all over CZ forums in more detail.
I have suspected I have a wheat gluten intolerance, but only recently did I summon the courage to go completely wheat-free. I will have celiac testing done in a couple of weeks. No matter what the celiac tests say, though, I know I have a gluten intolerance.
How do I know? I got serious about eliminating ANY possible trace of wheat. I've had to go to a couple of restaurants, but I avoided ANYTHING that might even have MSG, any seasoning combo that could have been contaminated with it. I'm about 2 weeks into my experiment now.
The result? WOW. My bowel movements are getting more & more normal. I battled with constipation previously. I had all kinds of minor symptoms I just never connected with wheat - constipation, inflamed bowels, burning & incredibly smelly intestinal gas, things that seemed like parasite symptoms (though it wouldn't be hard to imagine having parasites if your intestines are inflamed & overwhelmed), mysterious allergic reactions (histamine feeling, near-asthma, rashes of red dots on my skin), undigested fat in stools & pale stools...it's not like I had these all the time, but I didn't eat wheat all the time, either. Mostly, I felt I wasn't absorbing the nutrients from my food very well at all. I was tired too often - I strongly suspected it wasn't normal to be as fatigued as I have been.
It had been totally frustrating to continually eat wheat and take iodine, even if I wasn't eating it every day. It's impossible to figure out what the Iodine is doing to you if you have a problem that is destroying your intestines. It probably aggravated the problem in some ways, even if it was helping in others. I still can't get over how I was fighting to get the waste out of my body for years, and now it's coming out normally in the past 2 weeks.
Currently, I am having to heal myself with easily digested foods - bone broths (stews with root vegetables & a little beef), cooked vegetables, a little raw fruit. I'm also keeping the raw dairy products in my diet, though I'm sure some people would consider that crazy, as wheat problems can often cause dairy problems from the internal damage. I had a beet, carrot, and ginger juice yesterday, though, and that gave me amazing energy. My energy levels have just been going UP every day. I suspect that people on a raw diet mostly get their energy from eliminating grains, or certain grains, from their diet. Right now, I'm extremely limited on other grains (corn or rice).
I want to get the message out there: you may be neglecting an underlying food problem if you are having trouble with iodine. I still keep my Iodine dose super-low and sporadic right now, as I feel like I am healing inside and need to go slow with it.
So, um, duh - seriously, if your bowels aren't working right, Iodine isn't going to improve things much. It took me quite a while to figure out why they weren't working right and to get the nerve to make this radical change in what I eat (to the detriment of my social life? I hope not).
