Salt has been used as a "natural" preservative for many generations. I'd rather have salt as a preservative than other chemicals. I can't find that salt is a nutrient.

Salt is also a good balance with potassium. I always feel that the cure for too much salt is more water.

It is better to use sea salt or unprocessed salt due to the numerous trace mineral content of them. This use would be for taste; as there are other ways to get these trace minerals.

Having said that, I don't know how I would be able to enjoy life without salt. It is unavoidable anyway. Many live foods contain sodium. Think celery. Put too much of that in a recipe; and you better taste it before adding salt.
