CHARLOTTE – Vance Martin said he found a wallet containing over $6,000 and, without thinking twice, dropped it off at the Shelby Police Department.
Jim Moncure, the owner of the lost wallet, said that he left it on top of his truck when he drove away after a pit stop on his way home from the mountains in Lenoir.
“I had my passport, my credit cards, about $1,500 in foreign currency,” Moncure said.
When Martin came in to the police department with the money, they put him in touch with Moncure.
“I asked Vance to tell me the story and he said we were off looking for a Christmas gift for our kids, we found one but we couldn’t afford it, and we were on our way back and we ran over this black thing on Hwy 74,” Moncure said.
Martin said he thought picking it up was the right thing to do.
“We moved over and went around it, and we decided we needed to go back and check and find out who it belonged to,” he said. “Somebody had run over it and there was money flying everywhere.”
Moncure said he’s grateful to Martin for what he did.
“He’s got a great moral compass,” Moncure said. “I’m glad to know him.”
Jim Moncure has since put the money from his wallet in the bank.
As a reward, he gave the Martin family $300, and the Martins said they’ll use it to buy their children a very special Christmas present.
