Common chemical in popcorn at center of concern

Pop Weaver, one of the largest producers of microwave popcorn, is removing a controversial chemical flavoring agent from its products.
The chemical -- diacetyl -- adds buttery taste. Government worker safety investigators have linked exposure to the synthetic butter to the sometimes fatal destruction of the lungs of hundreds of workers in food production and flavoring factories.
And while Pop Weaver has dropped diacetyl from its product, it remains in widespread use in thousands of other consumer products, including the microwave popcorn brands Orville Redenbacher and Act II.

I had a friend who developed a strong odor and he was a
very clean person but this odor beset him and he was at
a loss to figure it out. It WAS rank, I will testify too.
Well, longer story shorter, he was able to finally figure
it out. Each night he made a bag of popcorn. When he went
on a trip he did not have his nightly microwave popcorn,
the smell stopped. When he returned home and resumed his
popcorn habit, the smell returned. Needless to say, he gave
up the microwave popcorn habit for air popped corn.

MoreThis is a reply to # 954,021MAY be toxic? I had pretty much assumed that it was. Movie popcorn, too. But it DOES smell REAL good.....

This is a reply to # 954,048Yeah, I kept the word in to be true to the
author's intent, however, my first reaction
was the same as yours. If my friend's experience
indicated anything, and he seemed to be extruding
plastic from under his arms, it was that processed
versions of popcorn had major drawbacks.
I am not one for Russian Roulette, even with popcorn,
so I will go for a bowl of air-popped organic popcorn
with some Sea Salt . Sometimes our local rental place
would throw a promotion, rent a movie and get free
popcorn. They would be amazed when I would pass on
the corn. "You can give it away...", they would say.
To who, I thought, as I reiterated, "no, thanks...".
Oh, and when I worked during college, at the Sky High
Drive-In, we would make up the popcorn and start
dogs and all the typical drive-in food. We served
barbeque @_@ and hot dogs and maybe hamburgers back
then, I cannot remember precisely. I do remember
though, thinking that the huge 5 gallon containers
of that yellow stuff did not look like it was good
for you. Over the years, they have new and improved
it to the point where people's bodies are rejecting
it.
Keep sniffin' but pass on the corn~!

This is a reply to # 954,021I can smell that nasty stuff on the store shelves. have you ever walked by that section, you can smell it without trying. It is a rancid smell. I always thought it was rancid margerine. I have had microwave popcorn that stunk up the shelves at home so much I had to throw it out. So, if I ever bought any, which was once in a blue moon, I bought the stuff that was flavored with real butter and it didn't seem to be near as bad. Now, I see all of it probably has this nasty chemical scent. One thing, if popcorn didn't require workers to produce, we would not be hearing about this chemical. It is only because the workers were getting irreversible lung disease that joe public is now hearing about it. Nice how the FDA and the Consumer Protection Agency refuse to study the effects on consumers, that only the EPA studied it and will not release it's findings to the public. That is our wonderful Capitalistic government for you. We should all be proud.
