Lions Gate (along with Weinstein Co.), the company distributing Sicko, had planned to release the film in over 1,600 theaters across the United States in June 2007. However, one week prior to the release (the same week that Rachesky made his purchase), the number was reduced to 400 theaters............

Mark H. Rachesky, M.D. purchased 33.4% (over 40 Million) shares of Lions Gate stock one week prior to the scheduled opening of Michael Moore's controversial film "Sicko" which happens to be distributed by Lions Gate and the Weinstein Co. (SEC filing can be found here). Interestingly, a pre-screening of the film was held on the same day in New Hampshire for over 600 people including doctors, health care lobbyists, nurses, political figures and pharmaceutical companies all from the health care industry.
Dr. Rachesky is the founder and President of MHR Fund Management LLC and affiliates who are investment managers of various private funds. Dr. Rachesky is currently on the Board of Directors of Keryx Biopharmaceuticals, Inc. who focus on the acquisition, development and commercialization of medically important, novel pharmaceutical products for the treatment of life-threatening diseases, including diabetes and cancer. He is also an investment broker for NovaDel Pharma Inc. (AMEX: NVD), a specialty pharmaceutical company who targets candidates suffering from nausea, insomnia, migraine headaches and disorders of the central nervous system (CNS). In addition DR. Rachesky is the beneficial owner of Medical Nutrition USA, Inc. owning approximately 29% of the company with 3,786,799 shares. He is also the Director of Neose Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTEC) which is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on the development of next-generation therapeutic proteins that are competitive with best in class protein drugs currently on the market. In 2003, the market for therapeutic proteins grew by almost 19% to $37 billion, and is predicted to achieve sales of over $90 billion by 2010. Recently the Doctor also has invested in Emisphere Technologies, Inc. another bio pharmaceutical company charting new frontiers in drug delivery. Originally, Lion’s Gate had planned a wide release of SICKO in over 1,600 theaters nationwide June 29, 2007 but one week prior to the release the number was reduced to a mere 400. This decision was made the same week Dr. Rachesky purchased Lions Gate stock. Could this be pure coincidence?
Did Dr Rachesky purchase the stock for controlling interests in Lions Gate? Controlling Interest is when the parent company owns a majority of the common stock that allows the shareholder major influence on the company. Normally for one to obtain controlling interests in a company one would purchase at least 51% of all shares however, in some cases a single entity can essentially maintain control with only 33.4% of the outstanding shares. Ironically, this is the exact percentage of shares purchased by Dr. Rachesky.
In the film SICKO Michael Moore turns his attentions toward the topic of health care in the United States in this documentary that weighs the plight of the uninsured against the record profits of the pharmaceutical industry. Moore interviews a number of people who have been left broke by medical bills even though they were fully insured, and explains how the corporate drive for profits has left numerous people in financial and medical disarray. After hearing that detainees in Guantanamo have access to free health care, Moore assembles a group of World Trade Center rescue workers to travel to Cuba in order to get the medical help they need for ailments they incurred in 2001. If Dr Rachesky purchased Lions Gate shares for controlling power is it safe to ask why? There are many debates and arguments as the the accuracy of Moore’s film. What interests me is if there were no truth and validity to the documentary why would someone go to so much trouble to make sure it is not a success and limit the amount theaters where the film can be seen? Sounds to me like this film has left the health care industry shaking in their boots and they don't want us to know the truth.

MoreThis is a reply to # 946,388The film is a good indictment of our system of healthcare; however I agree with Mercola that Moore reaches the wrong conclusion when he calls for the government to pay for all chronic illnesses - that would simply further entrench the current system of managed sickness, provide little or no incentive to adapt healthier lifestyles (one can't fail to note Moore's waist size here) and soon bankrupt us.
A far better and far less expensive approach would be proper diet and nutrition, as Mercola calls for, and, to add my own two cents, the use of safer and far less expensive natural alternatives to dangerous man-made drugs - alternatives which actually prevented chronic illness from occurring and often reverse and heal it when it does occur.
It will be interesting to see if Michael Moore follows through on the rumors of an expose' of the drug industry as his next film. Aaron Russo has indicated such plans but, in a cruel twist of irony, may not live to do so because of the failed mainstream treatment of his cancer.

It is pretty ironic that a dr would buy up Lions Gate stock prior to the release
of SiCKO. I don't know much about the doctor in question and what influences
he may have, yet it is skeptical. The number of running theaters reportedly dropping 75% , if true, is startling and suspicious. I know in my town it ran only about a week-of course being up against Harry and Homer is not an easy bill to fill.
Lions Gate is public, so more info is forthcoming-just have to hunt it down.
I look at the pharm industry and its outreach realizing how wide it goes. Change is
not going to be smooth , painless, nor willingly achieved. The drug companies have their power in places that are going to make a 'transition' to universal healthcare for this country a very tough one indeed. There is going to be one hell of a fight for sure and unfortunately the cause is under armed. It's parable to
a transition to alternative fuels and transportation-the oil companies have bottomless pockets and people are afraid of change.
Put the right propagana on the video screen and you'll have people shooting and hollering against universal health care. Americans in general are A.D.D. and will
believe in what we are told to believe at the time and like it! At least 97% anyway ,I feel.

I have believed this simple philosophy for decades. The doctors will keep pushing the stuff if we buy into it, the key is to buy out.
I can honestly say, that in the last 30 years of living right/smart I have been healthy enough to have gone without modern medicine and have enjoyed a drug free lifestyle. No chemicals, hormones, refined sugar,etc...My son now 13 has missed
maybe 3 days of school in his life due to illness and myself the same duration of work.
Americans have been brainwashed since 'viewing' age by ads and outright mind control. Us babyboomers had a light dose compared to the intesity nowdays.
My son watches an hour or two a week of tv. Most Americans don't have an opinion
of there own anymore,sad to say. It's forums like this that CAN spread a positive
and strong message to others that we must take things in our own hands. Big brother is NOT there for US, only themselves and their twisted, greedy lives. The rich are going to fight to the death on issues like health , oil, media,etc...
If those truly seeking change are willing to 'bleed' then we have a chance of making the changes successfully. It won't be pleasant or without sacrifice.
Change does not have to be fought for. It must be strategized and the strategy must be followed through. Sad to say, the leaders for good causes are hard to & find if found are challenged immensly. Thus it is imperative to act individually first and foremost,gradually others will follow and converge.
In 5 years things can change drastically. Look at the use of PDAs,for example. Five
years ago how many people had them? It was marketing and the creation of need that
makes PDAs so popular and a 'can't live without' option for millions. Five years can make a difference, yet we have to start somewhere and it's not just changing healthcare in this instance. It's weaning off of senseless wars , managing our tax dollars and educating the country in general to find the needed money to pay 100% of the chronic illnesses in the decades to follow until Americans are healthier and are making wiser choices of diet and overall lifestyle. The money is there, yet
like gears in a clock, they all must be working properly.
Michael Moore sets minds in motion, he's a movie maker , that's what he does. It's hard to know where to start and what to do when we stomp out of the theater all flustered . That flustered feeling is a great start. All we can do is make a fuss to the point that the only way we shut up is to achive our goals. It's goals for the good of everyone in this country, especially the ones that need them the most. We have to rally for everyone.
