This is a reply to # 937,395You are quite right - yet most people have no idea how widespread the practice is. You can bet that sugar and other artificial sweeteners are made with solvents. As are decaffientated coffee and tea, salt and a very large percentage of vitamins, minerals and dietary supplements used by us health-conscious people.
Take a look, for example, at the Splenda you are reluctant to forego. Here is an excerpt from the Citizens for Health to the USDA:
"4. The Agency should initiate a full-scale public-health investigation (involving U.S. Public Health Service environmental health officers) in and around McIntosh, Alabama, into local residents’ reports of environmental exposure effects related to the transport and use of chlorine and the release of cyclohexane, a known toxin, from the Splenda plant in McIntosh, Alabama, looking into health problems than can be caused by exposure to cyclohexane, including but not limited to: coma; encephalopathy; liver abnormalities; chronic “painter’s syndrome; psycho-organic solvent syndrome; organic solvent dementia; difficulty concentrating; dementia; memory loss; mood disturbance; arrhythmia; confusion; dermatitis; dizziness; fatigue; headache; in-coordination; inebriation; irritability; lethargy; impaired speech and stupor and ecological effects such as fish die-off, and into other health concerns related to the transport, use and/or release of chlorine, dimethylamine, N,N-dimethylyformamide; nitrate compounds and phosgene gas (4-14).
5. Based on all of the above-cited (and below-detailed) release of toxins (including cyclohexane) in the toxic, chlorine-based factory manufacturing of sucralose (Splenda), it is inappropriate and misleading (15) to consumers for Splenda to include “Made from Sugar So It Tastes Like Sugar” or any variation of this on its packaging and marketing materials and, therefore, the Agency must disallow or prohibit this slogan and its variants."

All solvents are not created equally. For example, Proctor and Gamble, who patented a Lo Han extraction method which uses solvents and has licensed it to Chinese manufacturers, has been involved heavily with liquid C02 extraction, which is considered safe and non-toxic.
Nevertheless, I will see what I can turn up about the solvents used to make Lo Han. In the meanwhile, I can report that, just like Stevia, absolutely zero toxicity has been found in Lo Han, and since it represents a threat to the mighty sugar and artificial sweetener industries whose products are all dangerous, you can bet they would have jumped on the most minute evidence.
Given the known dangers of sugar, saccharine and sucralose, I will opt for Stevia or the better tasting Lo Han, known as the "longevity plant" in China. Instead of demonstrated dangers, both have a clean record of safety and both have demonstrated anti-oxidant activities and have been linked to cancer prevention.

MoreThis is a reply to # 937,988I was convinced, and a few weeks ago stopped using Splenda in our house. I ordered some Xylitol.
I still eat one food from the store that has Splenda in it because so far I haven't found anything to replace it.
I really love Xylitol. My teeth feel different.
