Corinthian
1088 Adult Canadians surveyed between June 12-13.
Among all those surveyed
59% accept evolution of which 34% believe in theistic evolution
22% believe in creationism
Quebequois are even more progressive:
71% accept evolution
9% believe in creationism
Another thing from the Angus Reid Poll is something that is true in every nation; the better educated the person the more likely they are to accept evolution. Acceptance of evolution goes from 59% for those with an education of High School or less to 71% for those with a University education. I have mentioned this
before, and it holds true for
scientists as well as for the Canadians surveyed. From the ARP Press release:
"As well, younger Canadians, those living in households earning $100,000 or more ayear, and those with university education are more likely to strongly believe inevolution, and more likely to disagree that humans and dinosaurs co-existed."
Though there is one disturbing aspect in this poll; 42% are under the false impression that humans and dinosaurs walked around at the same time.
The Flintstones is not a documentary.
This poll highlights the need for further education in order to dispel some false notions. Science teachers clearly need to do a better job.
In other polls USA has ranked just above Turkey in their believe in creationism, hooray for USA! Funny that even though Canadians go to our movies, watch our TV shows, listen to our music they are so different from us. They, thankfully, have not adopted the culture of stupidity that is so warmly embraced over here. It would be nice if a little common sense filtered south, specially toward the Bible belt.
