I have one on my big toe. That toe was cut nearly off when I was little. This is how I have controlled it for years:
First I control the tenderness from the inflammation so that I can work with it. As it regrows, it keeps getting inflamed, so I have to repeat the process. I control the inflammation with
Colloidal Silver , any potency, I like 5-20ppm. I put it on a piece of a cotton ball, put that on the inflammation and tape it with a band aid. I change it in the AM and PM. If you don't have to go out, you can change it several times during the day for a faster cure as the CS has to stay on only six minutes to work. It takes about three days or more of this to control the tenderness if I let it go, but only a day or two if I keep on top of it.
When I am able to work with it, I put the clippers vertically about the middle of the outer nail and make a small indentation. I then cut horizontally toward the ingrowth, and for the last part, grit my teeth and tear. Then cut horizontally the other way. Sometimes I have to keep up the CS for another day or two. After you get a routine going, it is not hard to keep up. I don't wear open toe shoes, but I have no pain either.
