I've been hearing some very negative facts about the CFLs that are currently being pushed. I had an experience with one "burning out" that startled me. I went briefly into a little-used room in our home turning on the light. As I was working on a small task, I heard a crackling, szztzing, then a loud pop. I looked around to determine where all this activity was coming from, when I saw that smoke was coming from the light fixture where we had placed a CFL. There was also a marked pungent odor being emitted at the same time. After it cooled, we carefully took it out and replaced it with an incandescent light bulb.

I was particular disturbed that it cost one woman $2,000 to clean up a CFL (because of the mercury contamination) after she accidentally dropped it whereupon it shattered on a carpeted floor.

I totally agree --- I see the stores are all stocked up with these CFL lights lately. Imagine if some hardware store stocked with these bulbs caught on fire, with all that mercury vaporizing out from the heat, it wouldnt be too safe for the community. Every day you hear of someone in our local news whose home was destroyed by a house fire. More mercury would be vaporizing all over the community from destroyed, crushed CFL bulbs.
I will not use them either. I am stuck with working 8 hours a day in an office with all flourescent lighting and NO windows for outside sun to come in. We only get 2 five minute breaks and 1 thirty minute lunch break-- not a generous amount of time permitted outside to absorb the afternoon Sun! So you can imagine how I'm not very thrilled about the upcoming phasing out of incandescent bulbs- while they push these CFL's on us.
The electric companies are also trying to seek a compromise with our US. government-- by requesting if they may still be permitted to manufacture 40 watt or lower incandescent bulbs, etc. once the final phase out takes place. Not sure when the exact timetable for that is, but I recall hearing something about 2009 - 2012 for this phase out.
My advice for everyone-- (especially you folks living in the Northern US - like Alaska and North East-- where yearly Sunshine is greatly lacking compared with Southern California) is to start buying low wattage 40 watt or lower full spectrum bulbs now, or at least the average bulb that is made to look similar to the spectrum of sunlight. General Electric, Phillips, etc, all make them. One brand that comes to mind is "Reveal"--- they are not expensive. I just got a pack of 4 for $1.99 made by Phillips.
Pick up a nice low wattage lamp-- like one of those Himalayan Salt lamps (they take a 40 watt or less candelabra bulb). Place them in front of a mirror for more light. The light glowing from within the salt lamps is very therapuetic and soothing after being stuck under flourescent bulbs at my job all day long.
Chromalux also makes full spectrum regular type bulbs that last longer than average light bulbs. Our healthfood sells these, but I believe you can also order them on discount at Vitamin Shoppe.

This is a reply to # 863,739I use them everywhere, for 15 years now.
Please keep in mind that I support your individial choice to not use them, go ahead, its not a big deal to the planet for two people, I am just worried the impact of your decision on other people.
I am concerned that some of this backlash is not based on solid facts, because it os coming from the same people who brought you global warming denials - energy sellers.
Also, Ken Adachi at Educate Yourself is a denier for another reason altogether - he thinks that it is a farce because "Gore is a Jew". Maybe Gore is Jewish, I dont know and don't really care, it make no difference to the non-rascists here.
So don't believe everything you read there.
Is there mercury in every CF lightbulb? Will they all have to be like that?
This is very serious, as CF lightbulbs will be a big help to solving global warming - we have to get smarter than to still be using light sources that are only 3% efficient [3 percent!!] like incandescents are. 10 times that will save massive amounts of pollution, so I hope you guys are not just out on a lark here in your refusals to use them.

This is a reply to # 864,236I still won't use them in my bedroom-- but will use the incandescent bulbs in there. I WON'T AND CAN'T go any higher than 40 watts. I don't have any ceiling lights in my room, so I only use those smaller lamps that can't handle any more than 40 watt bulbs anyway.
I feel that there is no point in keeping lights on when not in the room, so the lamp goes on only when I'm using it. When I leave the room for any reasonable length of time, I shut them off. Also, My little television hardly gets used except for the News or TLC programs -- and I don't leave that on either.
I've always been anal retentive in making sure all lights not being used are shut off. Maybe in a past life, I worked in a Light House..lol..
Our kitchen and basement ONLY has flourescent lighting, so that should be no problem--- especially since we also have windows that bring in sunlight to balance the flourescent light out.
I personally will still not buy any CFL bulbs- Unless they can verify that mercury is no longer used in them. Instead I will buy the lesser of two evils: Flourescent Full spectrum bulbs.
Otherwise, the 40 Watts bulbs I have--- used reasonably should not really hurt the environment unless one keeps several 40 watt bulbs on at a time. I don't do that anyway, as I also use candlelight. (my room has no windows)
Believe it or not, I do see your point, and realize that we all have to cut back- and can't go hog wild with lighting, etc.. as we have in the past. I'm compromising by using only 34 or 40 watt bulbs--because I am light deprived and during the Winter months, I get that SADD syndrome. I used to use 60 watts or higher, so this is actually a cut back for me that I'm willing to make.
I am probably going to end up using all full spectrum flourescent bulbs in the long run after all the low watt incandescents are used up.

I'd like to add my two cents worth.
Compared to incandescent bulbs,
flourescent lighting is a fantastic bargain.
Except that the frequency is unhealthy to be
exposed to if you are a human being.

I would like to introduce those of you that are not familiar
with LED lighting a chance to look at it.
it is not uncommon to get up to 180 Lumens per watt with LED
lights. This is double what you get from a flourescent light.
LED's can last ten years of continuous use use as well.

Another option is to use A high performance pigmant called,
"Luminova". This product mixed with paint can last overnight
providing a light source that can be charged by sunlight.
No batteries, no wires etc. I have both LED lighting and
Luminova pigment as a powdered sample and as well as a painted
sheet. I put the sheet on the back of my toilet tank and I do not
have to turn the bathroom light on at night period.
I painted the inside of the bathroom globe that covers the ceiling
light and removed my sheet. Even better. That a watt is a watt is a watt
in not true. Sure can tell you that 746 watts is equivelent to one horsepower,
but what we really need instead of a salesman telling you that his vacuum
draws 12 amps from the wall socket is how effiently it uses those watts.
The United States Navy painted the ceiling of a hallway onboard one ship
with Luminova pigment added to the paint and it was too much light. Now,
Only moldings are painted with the paint. The emergency signs onboard ships
are using this pigment now, as well, as buildings being built in New York after
"911" are using Luminova as evacuate strips and exit signs. No wires, batteries,
transformers to charge the batteries etc. Talk about reducing the use of natural
