I have a 12 week old Golden Retriever Puppy who has started eating and chewing on rocks and stones. Is there anything I can do to stop Sasha from doing that? Whenever I catch her I extract the stone and throw it away and tell her no...

This is a reply to # 769,176What kinds of rocks and stones? Many of them have minerals, it *may* be that she feels she needs them. Animals are very in tune with their own dietary needs, my dog and other dogs I see in the park often dig up and chew certain types of grasses and weeds .. there is something there for them. Mine will eat small amounts of soil too. It keeps him well.
Yu might want to add a little powdered kelp, some unrefined Sea Salt and some general minerals to the diet. See if that helps.
If it's just the case of stopping an action, offering a reward every time she stops doing something is helpful (treat/toy). My dog knows the term "leave it" and he will walk away from an object or drop the object immediately.

MoreThis is a reply to # 769,188In an older dog I would agree that it's most likely that she's missing a mineral or something of the sorts - however at 12 weeks puppies put everything into their mouths - I've been working on 'leave it' and for the most part she does. I will look into what type of stones she is eating.
I have tried various supplements, though they all lead to really itchy skin and a strong smell - so I have stopped them. Can you recommend what minerals to add? I have kelp and Seasalt - both of which I will give her.- Re: Rocks/Stones Invincible

What kind of diet do you have the pup on?
The most important minerals will come from the bones of raw organic meat. Mine regularly eats chicken wings (always raw) - keeps his teeth really healthy.
Kelp and the Sea Salt will contain all the trace minerals necessary, the raw bones/marrow will have the calcium ..
some dogs like a little unsulphured blackstrap molasses too.
You can also use ionic trace minerals in the water (just small amounts) like water ox or active liquid minerals.

This is a reply to # 769,210I am still doing a combination - raw beef/chicken/turkey etc., a little bit of brown rice and some steamed veggies. I want to start giving bones today. I understand that you think only raw is the best way to go though for me it's also a matter of cost.
I just gave Sasha some Kelp which she readily ate.

Is there a possibility of spraying these tempting rocks with a bitter apple spray or something safe, yet intolerable to the pup, so the next rock encounter would not be pleasant?
I agree with Invincible and the idea of adding minerals to the diet. Sounds like you are doing well with the raw food plan. I look around for the best deals on raw meats which keeps the costs way down. I personally find it is cheaper to feed raw than commercial dog. As the puppy grows you will feed more, but then once they acieve full size, the amount of raw food needed for maintenance will actually decrease and settle down, unless the dog is working strenuously.
Invincible taught me about EFT for animals. It might be an idea for this.

This is a reply to # 769,239Well, as the midday meal I just gave Sasha her very first bone. She's doing wonderful with them. At first she looked at me and then she started licking the bone and then she started chomping.
Let's see how it goes - I am hoping that will keep her busy and away from rocks/stones & plants. :-)
