Look into the history of religion, specifically Christianity and the individual actions taken by the Popes... much medical information was buried and burned by the church, starting in about the third century.
Medical knowledge before that time had no equal until about the late 1800's - 1900's. I think the knowledge was regained primarily due to every day people beginning to understand what works and what does not through trial and error… then conventional medicine and "a better life through chemistry" took root starting in about 1906 and escalating after the 1930’s. The rest of the story most of us know.
