Hi,
Both my kids have very severe Excema. Like most who write here, have tried almost everything as far as creams, meds and even saw top pediatric dermatolgist at UCLA last yr and no NEW suggestions from him.
BIGGEST issue is the uncontollable itching at NIGHT!! The condtion of their skin and existance of the Excema as we see it on surface of the skin is from the non stop ITCHING!! Does anyone have any suggestions or tried methods that help subdue the ITCHING.
For my kids the itching is primarily triggered during the day by heat, persperation, grass, dust or certain fabrics etc.
The BIGGEST issue though is Itching at nighttime. During the day we help them avoid the above listed items that can trigger a bad itch, but at night while they sleep in a cool room under cotton sheets they usually wake up at least 2 or 3 times as a result of itching while they sleep. Then they bleed and it stings and it's just awful! My daughters legs ooze and bleed and she can nevre wear a dress or skirt, always light pants.
While the repair of the flare ups with lotions is very important, it is the ITCHING I really wish we could control as it is ITCHING that causes the skin to get cuts, scabs, become red and swollen. If we eliminate or reduce the itching, their skin would be in much better shape!!!
Any advice would be much appreciated!
PS We do use Benedryl and then Hydroxizine (Prescribed) when it gets very bad at night. We prefer not to have to resort to these meds unless really necessary as we beleive all they really do is "knock" our kids out....like giving them sleeping pills!
