Hello ladies:
Once I had bacterial vaginosis (gardnerella probably), fishy smelling or strong smelling, not yeast, different pH. I cured it with povidone-iodine (sold as douche, but I used it full strength, 30%. It is sold in Betadine or other antiseptics, but I wasn't sure about the other additives. The brand I used was Lake Consumer, in a douche box, $2.50 at Wal-Mart, but you can get generic brands at drugstores, about $3.00. I only used it for two weeks, about half or less of each little packet each night; two come in each package. I just poured it straight from the packet into my vagina, using my fingers to push it in, with pelvis slightly raised, then let it dry about 15 minutes. This can be serious, as it can cause problems in the fallopian tubes or uterus, and affect pregnancy. The povidone-iodine stimulates lactobacillii to grow in your vagina, to replace the bad bacteria; many articles published about this study. Only about $10.00 in all, cured me, luckily. You could do it a little longer; it's best if you don't skip a night, because that could bring it back.
As others have said, if one has a yeast infection, Yeast-Gard suppositories work great. It won't cure it if you have candida overgrowth. But it will keep the yeast infections away, until you cure the overgrowth.
For either problem, it helps to supplement with lactobacillus acidophilus, orally, from the health food store.
Good luck to everyone!
Julie
