I agree that the short sunlight hours in winter are terrible, I lived in Moscow one winter and the 4 dim hours of daylight were miserable. Now I live on the equator so we get 12 hours sun everyday! Much better.
I think the tanning bed is worse than no sun. Perhaps you can buy full spectrum lights for one room in your house that you are in the most and this can help in the wintertime, or buy a sunlamp. It's my understanding that tanning beds emit different rays or combinations than the full spectrum and sunlamps. And if you want sungazing, you might try to find a place during your lunch where you can spend five minutes or so in the sun.
