Your body is begging you to do something besides a water only fast. Water only is too harsh for most people to do unsupervised for more than a few days and after months of cleansing and preparation.
Water Fasting is not the way to lose weight quickly, your metabolism slows down by as much as 25% within 48-72 hours.
Also, don't look at ketosis as a magic bullet for weight loss. Yes, is does mean that fat is being broken down a little more rapidly in order to create ketones for fuel; but any diet or fast where you take in fewer calories than you need will result in losing the stored fat. The body stores fat for times of famine, its a natural survival mechanism our Creator gave us. Fat is also a storehouse of toxins including chemical pesticides, residue of drugs the liver could not completely filter out, and excess hormones. For those who need a long term cleanse or weight plan extreme care must be taken to not release more of these toxins into the body the the individual body can process at any given time. That is one reason why extended unsupervised fasting can be so dangerous.
The probability of an electrolyte imbalance has also been mentioned. This will result in weakness, blackouts or fainting, irregular heartbeats and eventually coma or death if not treated. Drinking too much water, tea, sodas or other non-nutritive liquids can quickly result in electrolyte imbalance. Fasting experts with a medical background generally do not recommend drinking all the water you can hold while fasting. This extreme intake of water is dangerous. I suspect your craving for broth was in reality a craving for electrolytes, both sodium and potassium. You did well by listening to your body.
My advice to you would be to stop water fasting. It would be best to eat potassium and magnesium rich foods for several days, along with veggie broths to restore balance to your body. If you still feel that fasting is the best way for you to lose weight, then try
The Master Cleanse fast. Download the book and read it carefully. Remember that you will be doing something that is both a diet and a cleanse. Respect the cleansing aspect even if it does not seem as important to you as losing weight. I have found I can lose just as much weight on
The Master Cleanse as I can with water only fasting. It may not be quite as healthy as a fresh fruit and veggie juice fast, but it is much easier and more economical. Don't worry about all the laxative tea and salt water flushes either, just do them as needed and your body will thank you for not keeping it constantly irritated.
I am going to begin a Master Cleanse variation this weekend. Both of my dogs died within a few weeks of each other and I went on a grief driven eating binge. I rarely weigh myself, but from the way my clothes are fitting I know I've gained a lot of weight around my waist and belly-the worst kind of weight gain. Since my doctor feels I am too run down to do a
Water Fast (I cut one short last month on his advice) and because weight loss is just as important at this point as cleansing and healing, I am adding a green drink to my lemonade regimen. In fact I need to head off to the health food store before work this afternoon.
I hope you will soon get to feeling better. Fasting usually is accompanied with healing crisis, but you should not be this sick. Take care of yourself and for now concentrate on getting better.
