its exactly like a battery in your mouth , those metal filling cause a short circut when touched by other metal. you should be useing PLASTIC utensils for ALL of your food or even wood. you will see what i mean just try it -no bad feeling-. ever see someone touch the booster cables together when trying to boost a car well that spark is sort of what is going on in the mouth when other metals are introduced to the already metal filled mouth. The main reason you feel it is because the fillings are touching your nerves in your teeth. There is not enough dentine between your filling and your nerve. This may be the state of the work done or you may have active decay under the filling. This happened with me. After about 20 years the old Amalgams begin to disintegrate and become porous allowing bacteria to enter and begin decay on the tooth. These must be replaced. The pain from the fork coming into contact with the filling is due to "galvanization". To cut a long story short a small electric current is generated and reaches the nerve.

This sensation can be quite perplexing, since you don't have to press hard with the fork to trigger the pain, and you can often chew down hard on food without any pain. The same happened to me after I had a big filling done about 16 days ago: I came in from the cold, had some beans on toast and wham!! Instant pain from the fork. It upset the nerve quite a bit, and I felt groggy for hours on end afterwards.

Fear not, however. The pain should begin to subside once your saliva corrodes the exposed metal. Eventually there will be no pain whatsoever - if you have older fillings you can verify this for yourself.
