I have discovered information surrounding soy to be the biggest source of misery, myth and misinformation.
Having eliminated soy and soy products from my diet I am much healthier and happier. Here's my take on what happens.
Soy is sold as a superfood. This is pure marketing spin to get over the fact that it is not a food at all. Soy, and it's many derivatives are potent toxins that drain nutrients from the body.
Soy is in almost all processed foods, often as the neurotoxin MSG, but may not be labelled as such. It may be called "vegetable oil" or "natural flavoring", or "hydrolyzed protein" or "malted barley" or many others. See http://www.msgmyth.com/hidename.htm
Soy and its even more toxic derivatives are the ingredients that cause so much misery. Soy propaganda is also the source of dietary and health misinformation. Many health cures "work" because they allow you to survive while still eating soy.
MYTH: If you are vegan/vegetarian you can't get enough protein/vitamin D/B12/minerals without supplements.
FACT: If you eat soy products regularly you become starved of protein/vitamin D/B12/minerals.
What happens when you eat soy
Soy contains large amounts of protease inhibitors, these stop your digestive enzymes working. Your pancreas produces more, using up reserves. Occasionally this is OK, but if soy products are used on a daily basis, we run short on the enzymes, particularly trypsin, and the ability to digest proteins.
If we absorb insufficient protein, we produce insufficent enzymes. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies are the result. This is all from eating soy.
It also leads to leaky gut,
food sensitivities and nearly every degenerative disease you can think of.
I am writing this because I stopped eating soy and all my
food sensitivities went away. I hope people find my perspective useful.
Cravings
A symptom of poor digestion (and hence of eating soy products) is craving of simple to absorb food, such as sugars and bread.
Refined
Sugar itself contains no other nutrients. Nearly all bread contains large amounts of soy, so eating it maintains the viscious circle.
Another symptom of poor digestion is rapidly eating large amounts of food. As we cannot digest by the usual aerobic mechanism, we gulp food down, and leave it to ferment in our gut. This is an adaptation due to our poor quality of our food. We can then absorb some of the nutrients from the breakdown products of the fermentation process.
If your body cannot detoxify at the rate you are ingesting toxic foods, you will become fat. Fat or thin, it can make you malnurished. Animals fed
Antibiotics weigh more, not because they are healthier, but because they are being poisoned to prevent them sheding excess toxins and therefore weight. Farmed animals tend to be fed a diet including soy rather than their natural diet.
My Solution
Eat better and tastier food. Find out about real food, organic food. If you crave something sweet, eat high quality sugar. Find something that tastes better than eating biscuits. Honey and maple syrup are examples of higher quality sugars. Eat them with something else that goes with it such as yoghurt or butter.
Stop eating when it stops tasting nice.
If you like it, it's good for you. If you find something you like better, you will become healthier and happier. Carry on eating what you want - you have adapted to eating it: to suddenly change will overload your detox mechanisms. Your body will guide you.
If you elimnate soy, and eat good food, you will improve your digestion. This will eliminate any desire to take supplements which contain soy products and are therefore counterproductive.
Other non/toxic-foods: margerine, supplements, pasteurized milk, anything that doesn't spoil.
