I've just received my w.k.g. and have been trying to cultivate them for about ten days now with no much success unfortunately.
I've been using sugar/dry fig solution which I normally use when making water kefir with my milk kefir grains (m.k.g.).
Milk kefir grains produce an excellent refreshing bubbly and fizzy drink, the only downside is that they don't propagate or multiply in this solution but only their native milk solution. This was the reason that I wanted to obtain some w.k.g.
Now using the same process that is been so successful with m.k.g. and applying it with w.k.g. has resulted in quite sour solution with no bubbles at all and some kind of moldy surface that would appear on top of the solution. Also the grains appear not be growing or multiplying at all.
Since I don't have any experience with w.k.g. but only with m.k.g. I can't say what is wrong.
Now I have placed them in filtered water to fast for a day and will try the same process again tomorrow.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
