Seeing as how mercury used to be used to treat syphilis in the era before Antibiotics , how come everyone says that it is a causative agent in infections?

Mercury is not a direct causative agent in infections. However, at high levels, it is a major culprit in kidney, liver and metabolic dysfunction. It is also considered to impair proper brain function.
