Hi Dr. Vinograd:
I just had my mercury fillings replaced with composites but some of the old fillings were very old and leaking that some teeth had very deep cavities (my dentist said that he could see the nerve exposed and I also saw it with a mirror).
He say that there was a high probability that I would need a root canal because of the deepness in the cavity.
At first, when the fillings were replaced I didn't have much pain, but now I feel lots of pain when I drink water particularly in one tooth. Sometimes the pain wakes me up in the middle of the night and I need to take some analgesic.
Why do people say that a root canal is bad for you?
I think that in my case a root canal would be a good option since I don't want my tooth to be extracted or do you think that if I wait longer the pain could cease?

The pain produced by water (I assume cold) is not unusual for a newly replaced filling. However, the spontaneous pain that wakes you in the middle of night is not. The tooth or teeth waking you up have a very low probability of getting better without treatment.
The reason we do not like to have endodontic (root canal) treatments performed, is that it usually relies on toxic materials to seal off the space where your nerve used to reside. in addition, the tooth now is only partially "alive" and often, an area of less vital tissue around the tooth is found. There are people who tolerate root canals better than others.

Tooth extraction is the option that would be most suitable for someone with a high degree of sensitivity, low tolerance to toxins and a compromised immune system.
Seeking a Biological dentist that will use less toxic materials would be a compromise for someone that is not in the above category and does not want to loose the tooth (teeth).
