Pepsi to test cans with chemical smell
February 21, 2006
FROM STAFF REPORTS
A chemical smell detected by some customers who bought Pepsi products from a Chicago-area Jewel store is likely an “isolated off-taste issue,” a spokesman for Pepsi-Cola North America told the Chicago Sun-Times on Tuesday. But the company will test the recalled soda to see what caused the odor.
Pepsi cans sold in packs of 24 were pulled from all Jewel-Osco stores in the area Monday after customers complained of a “chemical-like smell,” Jewel-Osco spokeswoman Juanita Kocanda said. She did not know which store sold the cans in question.
Pepsi-Cola spokesman Dave DeCecco said the company had isolated the batch from which the product in question came and was in the process of inspecting it.
Consumers with questions should call Pepsi’s consumer hotline at (800) 433-2652.
