Dear Michelle,
I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis when I was 16 (9 years ago). I can totally understand your son's frustration with his illness. There were days when I too wanted to curl up and cry. I had several "flare ups," in fact, it always seemed like I was having a flare up. What a flare up is, is when your immune system become too weak to fight the inflammation in the colon, and you sometimes have severe symptoms of diarrhea, mucous in the stool, blood in the stool, severe abdominal cramps, gas, bloating, fever, and so on. I was able to control the symptoms at first with maintenance medications, such as Asacol, Dipentum, and Colazal. I got to the point where my flare ups were so bad that I spent days in the hospital, and had to take large doses of steroids like Prednisone and Deltasone to stop the bleeding and flare ups. Finally, my condition got so bad that I opted to have a proctocolectomy-illeostomy, which means that I had my entire colon removed, and a temporary colostomy bag. Now, my small intestine is connected to what's left of my rectum and I can function as a normal human being again (except with more frequent stools). My advice to give to you is to always seek medical advice for your son, and LISTEN to him. If he tells you he is not feeling well, then baby him, becuase not only does he need medical support, but colitis is a condition that can seriously damage your ego, and chances are he really, really needs you. Let me know if you need me for any further info. heathervasq@msn.com
