Then there's the well-meaning friend who reminds you of Downs Syndrome at your age (I'm 45). Mary, God doesn't make mistakes and I believe they will find some day that age isn't a factor. [They may have found so already. Dr. Mendelsohn tells of research that shows it's the amount of radiation you have received, not age, that is the decisive correlating factor. It just happens that older women as a group have had more opportunity to be X-rayed, etc. - Ed.] Otherwise, why do so many younger women have Downs babies? He wouldn't have made it possible for us to still bear children in our forties and then have us full of defective eggs. It doesn't make sense.

This is a reply to # 525,261I am trying to get the gist of this piece of information. Is it suggesting that my son has Down Sydrome due to some exposure to radiation in utero??

MoreThis is a reply to # 525,262From my understanding, Dr. Mendelsohn suggests in his book that the number of exposures to radiation that a woman experiences throughout her life increases her chances of having a Downs Syndrome child or one with another "abnormality." I have read his book, but the table of contents and index does not lead me directly to this information in his book, so I found something about it on the web site listed. The exposures occur over a lifetime and I guess can affect the woman's eggs/chromosomes/DNA, etc.
It is just an interesting suggestion. I do not know anything else about it.
I have just accepted a position working with the developmentally delayed population and am due to start October 16th. This is one of my favorite populations. I believe that these children are a blessing from God, whether or not we ever figure out what causes the condition.

Thanks for the info. I know that there is speculation over a woman's age, heredity, and exposures to a vast number of supposed contributing factors.
I'm like you--for whatever reason Cameron(6 years old and a joy to behold) came into our lives we feel blessed for it.
I too have worked within the special needs community and found it to be uniquely and deeply satisfying. You will too.
Good luck in your new job--I wish I were you--but alas, am on bedrest with a difficult pregnancy(5 months and counting until this soccer star is born-he is truly nimble!) So unfortunately I cannot work at present.
