To soften the stool, you need soluble fiber. Insoluble fiber (wheat bran, psyllium, etc) adds bulk but doesn't soften.
Soluble fiber is found in apples (pectin), oat bran, flax and chia seeds, fruits and vegetables. A personal favorite is eating an apple before each meal. Another is to soak 2 Tbs of chia seeds in a glass of water for at least 20 minutes but overnight in the fridge is best. It turns to gel. Drink that in the morning and it will smooth things out. Chia seeds absorb 10x their weight in water, so don't eat them dry!
