I am a bit surprised that your doctor prescribed Miralax for your son, unless it was for immediate and temporary relief. Miralax is not intended for long term use. The web page excerpt that follows is from
http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic2/polyglyc_pi.htm
"MiraLax achieves its best results when used between one and two weeks. You may discontinue taking the drug after you have had several satisfactory bowel movements. Should unusual cramps, bloating, or diarrhea occur, consult your physician. MiraLax is intended for up to a two week course of therapy. You should not use for a longer time unless directed by your doctor.
When you say you have given him adult enemas but he holds them in, are you referring to the Fleet type phospho soda chemical disposable units? If so, you may want to try a plain warm water (103 degrees F) salt solution (1 teaspoon table or
Sea Salt for each pint) of water administered with an enema bag or bulb syringe. Typically for a child that age, 1 ounce of water for every 2-3
pounds of body weight for a child of normal health. Severely constipated children can typically take more than one ounce for each 2
pounds without undue discomfort.
So for a 40 pound constipated child I would probably use a pint and a half, and for 60 pounds, a bit more than a quart.
